So, I found an ENCLOSURE for your Optical
Drive that looks like Apples External Optical
Drive. I haven't been able to figure out how
to buy just the Enclosure with power supply.
I've eMailed them twice and I'm waiting for
a helpful reply. For all of us that have pulled
our Optical Drive and have been looking for
a home for it, this looks promising. If you
crunch the numbers it should sell for around
$15.00 (USA) without a power supply. I bet
its plastic but I'm not going to lose any sleep
over that. Does anyone know if Apples enclosure
is also plastic? Thanks!

Just ordered it for $29.94 with shipping but w/o power supply.
MAXupgrade just added the option in their drop down menu
at the top of the page. Its the last entry. I assume it can use a
generic power supply. I have a draw full
.

I already have one similar to that one
but I've always liked the looks of the
Apple Ext Enclosure for the Air. I didn't
want to pay around $100 when I already
have several optical drives without enclosures.
I think I've killed two birds with one stone or
something like that.

Maxupgrades taller one is $25. Not as nice looking though.

Apparently their are two enclosures. The one that I purchased
cannot use an external power supply and another enclosure
towards the bottom of the page which can use an external
power supply as well as eSATA. Its sad their web page is so
confusing (to me). If I had known this I may have purchased
the second enclosure. I'm so disappointed I doubt I'd bother
doing business with them again. BTW, the enclosure is mostly
plastic.

I will certainly agree that it is very confusing, but the last option in the purchase drop down is for the taller drive case right?

When I eMailed them the other day and complained
that a choice without a drive was unavailable they
added it to the last choice position. I checked just a
little while ago and it had been removed. They apparently
want to sell you a Drive and added the choice w/o a Drive
just for me. If your interested in their products, call them.
I wish I had.

The enclosure is available right now in the drop down menu, for 25$. Unfortunately, international shipping is also 25$.. Meh... Quite a bit.. Sad

I will probably order it anyway though.. It is so nice looking..

Their are two versions. One uses power
from its USB cable like the Apple's model
and the other can use an accessory power
supply, it also has eSATA. The $25.00
version can't use the accessory power
supply or eSATA.

I might not understand your comment, but I'm not sure they added anything for you, since I'm still seeing the taller drive case for $25.

PostPosted: Mon Feb 14, 2011 12:22 am    Post subject: The Long Story Reply with quote

Here's the long story. When I first
stumbled across these Optical Drive
enclosures (their are two) neither
one was listed in the drop down
so you can see what they cost.
Since I didn't know the
price of either I emailed them
and complained that they were only
listed/offered with Optical Drives.
I explained I just wanted the bare
enclosure. They eMailed me back
and said check the drop down again.
I did and only one enclosure was listed.
The skinnier one that can't use an
external power supply. They don't make
it clear that only one enclosure could use
an external power supply. Shortly after
I purchase it they removed it from their
drop down so a bare enclosure wasn't
offered.
Well, I just checked the drop down again
and magically its back. Just one enclosure
is still offered, the one that I bought
that can't use an external power supply
which STILL isn't made clear.

They still don't offer in the drop down the
thicker model that has eSATA and can also
use an external power supply. I don't know
if these folks are playing games or incompetent
or what.

Maybe they'll read this and be embarrassed
again and list BOTH enclosures. Maybe not.
I no longer give a $h!t and will not comment
any further. I can't run their business for
them and strangely they can't either.
Why would they make it difficult to
buy their products? Go figure!
