Hi,

I recently jump on the blue-rey train and started ripping my blue rey collection.
I rip my first blue rey using MakeMKV and got a 25 gig mkv file with the audio and subtitle I selected. When I tried to use handbreak to re-encode it to a smaller size, Handbreak didn't give me an option to add subtitle. It was like the source didn't have subtitle at all. When watching the MKV file with VLC I can select the subtitle.
Do I need to do something spacial to have the subtitles be available when ripping blue-rey

Thanks,
Simon

They are there as long as you rip them to the original. But my understanding is that they are in a format that Handbrake can't deal with. There are srt files of many subtitles on the net...try googling the title of your movie and subtitle and maybe SRT.

Smithcraft is a member here and he might know of an app, mac or pc, that might be able to work with the BD subs (PGS?). I haven't had much luck.

ez061111 hit the nail on the head. It's the image format used in BD subs. PGS is currently not handled by Handbrake.

One Java app that you can try is BDSup2Sub. I have yet to try it so I can't say how it works.

Another option is to become familiar with MKVmerge. It's a very simple program, and if you take your original rip from MakeMKV, and then mux in you Handbrake transcode, you will have the original subs in the final file. Of course you will want to de-select the original video file. I'm not sure what app, or hardware, you are using to enjoy your features so I don't know if it will handle the PGS subs. I think that Plex currently has unofficial support for PGS subs. I hear they sorta work, and sorta don't work that great. I've heard that XBMC properly supports PGS subs but I haven't tried it.

Like ez061111 said, if you can find and srt file on the net that matches your source you will be good with that. With MKVmerge you can even mux it into the final file that you created with Handbrake.

Anyway, that's the long and short of it as I understand it.

Thanks Smithcraft and ez061111,

I'm using 2010 mac mini with Plex 8. I'll check BDSup2Sub and MKVMerge to see if I can extract the subtitle to an srt format.

Thanks,
sraveh
