GREAT Price on "Aperture 3" in App. Store....BUT

"Aperture 3" sells from between $179 too $199.
On the App. Store its just $79. Let me tell you
thats extremely tempting. The only problem
as I've stated in another post is, when you
acquire an App. from the App. Store it doesn't
give you a zip file to retrieve the App. from.
It simply shows up in your Applications folder
as well as your Dock.

Your thinking, whats the big deal? Well, when I
buy a new Mac in the coming months, and fire
it up, I'll install all of my non-native App's from
DVD's, CD's and zip files. If their is no zip file
I can find for Aperture, how do I install it.
Their has to be and easy answer for this that
I'm missing. Obviously, I must download it
again from the App. Store but how do I do
this without paying for it again?

actually know the answer and haven't done it,
I can guess as well as you but a guess isn't
helpful.

Like I said, guesses aren't helpful. A "link"

I stumbled across something shortly after the App store went live that discussed purchases and in particular if you get a new computer, etc. Can't find it.

You can back up Aperture.app file yourself to a zip or as it does state here. It also states you can re-download any purchased apps and this can be done without charges.

I would guess that they have it somehow tied to 10.6.6 and need to be tied to the App store for activation (using your Apple account), so moving to a computer using an earlier system might not work. I haven't purchased anything form the app store but have Aperture 3 and Apple Remote Desktop; both of these are listed in the App Store list as "Installed" but they don't reside in the Purchases section.

In regards to Aperture 3, it is a pig. My RAW files are 25 MB files and when I do a large shoot, it is the only program that seriously puts the mojo on my MBP i7, at times hitting 105°C. Aperture 2 lacks a lot of the newer features, but does not tax nearly to the same degree. Depending on what system and what you are doing with it, I can't think of a mini that I would currently install it on. Others may have a different view on this.

Now that I've read them I'm more at ease
with the new App. Store. I must say, I'm
feeling better about purchasing from Apple's
new App. Store in the Clouds.

It states, to Backup your App's simply
copy them to an external location, like
an HD etc., that just seems to easy, like
uninstalling by dragging an App. to the
trash. That worked in the past but its
not as clean as it use to be because of
how complex App's have gotten.

I'm having trouble believing you can drag
Aperture or Photo Shop or something big
and complex to a DL-DVD to copy it and
thats it.

Before I do that I'll need others to walk
that path before me.

As far as Aperture being a pig
I have Elements and HATED it
because I found it to also be a pig.
I ended up uninstalling it. I had
used PhotoShop in the past and
it was King of pigs. I've been using
GIMP but its been rough going do
to lack of good documentation.
Could you recommend something as
an alternative? I guess I need to do
more homework. Like trying all of
the Image Manipulating
App's that have free Demo's.

Thanks for the heads up on GraphicConverter moobile.
I wasn't familiar with it. I've tried several BETA
image manipulating App's over the last few years
and all without exception were buggy. Yah, I know
they were BETA'S.

I downloaded GC, I'll have to give it a spin though,
Aperture 3 is not much more expensive than GC.
Elements is a pig and Aperture 3 is a pig but more
powerful than Elements. I think $79 for Aperture 3
at that price will be a game changer. Photoshop
probably won't come down in price but most of the
rest may, in order to compete.

Ok, an update on Graphics Converter. I typically
use a camera that captures an image in both
RAW and jpeg at the same time. Graphics Convertor
handles RAW files poorly. When I import a RAW
image file into GC for some type of manipulation
everything goes well. BUT, when GC exports the
altered file, often the new altered file can't be read
by any image viewing software, not even GC.

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience
using the App. Pixelmator? Its selling at the App. Store
for $29.99. I've Googled around and it seem's interesting
but I'm apprehensive. I don't want to keep spending money
and become disappointed. Buying one App. after another
could get expensive.

I have always found GC support is spectacular - use the support under the menu Help:Contact support by email..., and you get an answer (usually from the author, Thorsten Lemke, and usually with the solution) in seconds. I've even had new beta versions sent to me to try, with the problem fixed! Fix is then included in the next release.

Thorsten got back to me a short time later
and the news wasn't to my liking. Apparently
when you import a RAW image file into GC
and manipulate it, you can't then save it
as a new RAW file. Thorsten suggested I
save it as a TIFF. I don't want to do that.
I would prefer to save the altered RAW
Image file as........well........a RAW Image
file.

I may re-install Elements again and use it
some more before I purchase Pixelmator.

Don't know of any programs, truthfully haven't searched much on this, that will allow you to save as RAW. In my head it's manipulating the negative, akin to fraud of sorts. Why the diversion to saving as TIFF, 8 or 16 bit?
