Super Duper, CCC or Time Machine backup 4 New HDD?

Haven't done any HDD copying recently--what's the general consensus for software to use? The last time I did this it was about 2 years ago and I can't remember which software I used [Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper].

Thoughts? What cloning software do you use now?

OR, do you just load your new drives with a backup from Time Machine?

There are probably as many SuperDuper fans out there as CCC fans, but I continue to use CCC for cloning and backing up drives. The 3.x versions of the software have been pretty solid too. Those were released since the last time you were using CCC or SuperDuper. I would definitely download the latest and give it a whirl. It's a solid application.

I find both to be easy to use, but I mostly use CCC. I started using it years ago when the developer (Mike Bombich) indicated that he didn't want shareware contributions from university folk. It wasn't the $10 fee so much as the statement that impressed me, as I eventually made a $25 contribution. CCC seems to have a few options that SD doesn't, but both are really excellent. Once when I had a problem cloning with CCC and SD, I emailed the developer of SD and was very impressed with how quickly he responded. After that, I felt obligated to buy it as well.

Bottom line: you can't go wrong with either product. And I think that both are much better for cloning than Time Machine. I use TM as well, but for the ability to recover old files rather than for cloning.

I used to use SuperDuper until OS X Leopard came out. CCC was the first to support Leopard so I switched back then and never found the need to go back to SuperDuper as both are equally as good in my book.

If you are just cloning a disk, no need for ANY of those products. Just use Disk Utility.

I use it all the time when I upgrade hdd's.

I swap between the two of them. Every once in a while there will be a volume that won't clone correctly with one, but the other will make a bootable just fine. I do however use CCC to do a full nightly back up of just the changes from that day. Time machine is turns my machine to sludge.

You have to use the "Restore" functionality within Disk Utility.

Drag the source disk to "source", drag the destination drive to "destination"...click restore. A bootable clone will be the result.

I've done this at least a dozen times (mostly when upgrading to bigger hdd's).
