Posted: Sat Jul 03, 2010 10:56 pm Post subject: An UPSIDE DOWM MacPro???? |
|
|
This is my next DUMB question about a MacPro.
Can the DVD/CD drive be easily installed UPSIDE
DOWN?????
Since the new MacPro is quieter than the previous
model I'd like to put it on the top of my desk. You
see I'm disabled with arthritis and it would be much
easier for me to have the MacPro on my desktop
upside down with the DVD/CD drive installed so it
will be correctly oriented and be closer to the desk's
surface. This way I wouldn't have to get out of my
wheelchair in order to use the drive. If it doesn't
work I may have to mount it off of the floor which
isn't as good as a solution as being upside down on
my desk.
Will it work and what other problems might I run
into? Could a MacPro user/owner render an opinion.
Thank's!!!!!! _________________ 2011 Mac mini 2.7 GHz i7 with

I think a better approach would be to connect an external firewire drive to the MacPro. I have a cheap $50 drive sat under my iMac and it works much better than the internal superdrive.
Doing it this way would put the drive at a level thats suitable for you without having to waste valuable desk space. _________________ Phil

I do have and use an external DVD drive now
but it loses its connection and I must unplug
it and plug it back in. I understand it is common for
USB DVD drive's to do this. Upside down would better for me
than reconnecting it. Upside down would be a more
elegant solution. Thats why I'm hoping it will work.

I'm not sue of the orientation of the HDD in the MacPro but drives don't normally like being run on their backs. So you might also want to invert all of the hard drives if that would be the case. I can't see there being any problems with the rest of the machine as the board etc would still be vertical _________________ Phil

I'll have to find out if the Hard Drives or
HD Sleds will fit upside down. I'm guessing they
won't.

Thank y'all, but I'm not looking for yet another attachment.
The two main reasons for wanting a Mac Pro is for Speed &
reducing my external USB/FW attached clutter. Its very attractive
putting 5 hard drives and a DVD drive in the Pro. Everything
about it is attractive except the price. It'll be difficult for me
to afford so I may weaken and get a new '10 Alumini. Whatever
happens will happen around Christmas. _________________ 2011 Mac mini 2.7 GHz i7 with

| You might call an Apple retailer and ask. They are usually really helpful, and Apple seems to be about helping everyone in regards to accessibility. |

Im guessing before Apple tells you the Mac Pro can be inverted, & the drive/s can be inverted back the correct way, they would try to sell you there MacBook Air superdrive.
Something like cooling or structural issues would be a problem & it would void the warranty.
Its worth a phone call
Any of the FW drives above will work fine. _________________ iMac 3.06ghz 27" 4gb ram C2D 1TB/LaCie d2 1T

Yah, I have a Sony/Optiarc USB DVD drive which has
served me more faithfully than the three Mac mini
drives I've burned through. The next external DVD
drive I'll get will be a Firewire 800 with Bluray and
maybe an eSATA connection. That way I can put six
Hard Drives inside of the Mac Pro. _________________ 2011 Mac mini 2.7 GHz i7 with

Not knowing your desk setup this may not work, but what about a stand to hold the Pro so the drive is more at desk height for you?
A potential problem is how the weight is distributed in the Pro, if it's rotated and the weight it up high it could make it tippy. As detailed as Apple tends to engineer things my gut tells me you can't just flip the drives in place. _________________ iMac 24" 2.4 GHz 4GB | Logitech S530 | Z-2300 speakers | NewerTech Guardian MAXimus RAID

and a service dog with my luck it would sooner or later be knocked over.
I never considered the weight distribution. You know, Apple probably
made it bottom heavy.
Its looking like, if I can hold out for a Pro instead of a new Alumini, its
going to be on a stand putting the drive slot at wheel chair height.
Then an external DVD drive on the desk so the Pro can be put on the
floor out of the way. I wouldn't be considering a Pro if it wasn't putting
all of my drives in one spot. Hell of a reason!
Thanks for your help!!! _________________ 2011 Mac mini 2.7 GHz i7 with

Bill any way you can mount it to the desk? Sort of some type of a J-hook, that would keep it off the ground, but not allow it to tip over? I see various methods used for PC's perhaps you can find something. I think we tossed a bunch of platforms when we remolded our computer lab. _________________ iMac 24" 2.4 GHz 4GB | Logitech S530 | Z-2300 speakers | NewerTech Guardian MAXimus RAID
