Sexy, I'm thinking we'll pick one of these up (probably refurb) to use as a HTPC eventually. I don't see what the ATV would have over this... _________________ --Marcus

I got a Mac Mini Server back in December, and I am really tempted to order this new model. ...anyone replacing their last gen Mini?
I use it as a server and media center computer, and the new 7200RPM HDD's and Nvidia chip seem to make it a "must" upgrade. |

Interesting, a redesign and a price increase, usually that works the other way. I guess this is the merging of the Mini and Apple TV that many of us have wanted for EVER. We'll find out soon, but who thinks that the included HDMI will let this Mini play a lot nicer with most tvs so we quit having to mess with SRX? _________________ Mercury TiBook 400MHz, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD, Airport

| at $999, the server seems to be a better value, although no optical drive...but I don't really use the optical drive I have in my 1.6 Ghz Tiger Mini. Can I use one of the 500GB HDD as the time capsule or as a raid? What's the size of the server install versus non server version? |

Whoa. Very sexy indeed.
Finally the HDMI whiners will be silenced, although I wonder how well it will handle HDMI audio and if the optical audio out can still be used with HDMI video.
EDIT-- ohh wait..I may be making an incorrect assumption that the standard 3.5mm audio out will still be analog and optical capable. The optical support may have been dropped based on another article I read.
The inclusion of the card reader seems wasted since USB adapters have existed for so long and wireless solutions are becoming more popular. An eSATA connector would have been a better choice. Glad to see that FW800 was not abandoned.
I imagine the unibody design is partially responsible for the larger price tag. I dunno if I agree on eliminating the power brick as a good thing. Keeping the bulky power source away from the rest of the sensitive electronics makes more sense. I am curious how they were able to shrink it down and not add any heat.
I can't wait to see the case-opening pics. |

Unlike the AppleTV (aluminium sides) and the Time Capsule (plastic), the top+sides+part of the bottom are aluminium, I'm guessing the case itself is a heat sink. _________________ Mac mini 2010 (Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz/8 GiB)

The promo states that the case is easily opened for access to RAM, but what about the HD? _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

Its very nice and super sexy looking.
I'm not too impressed with the price and specs though. I really expected a much better bump in CPU speeds. Nice to see easy access to the ram and the elimination of the power brick, but built in PSU and a slimmer design definitely worry me about heat issues, hopefully the aluminium design will act as a good heat sink. Having the SD slot on the back is a ridiculous idea. _________________ Phil

I've had my eye on the mac mini server for the last week or so. I just can't bring myself to commit to it yet. For some reason I am stuck wanting a DVD drive. I know that you can get the external super drive for $99 or use a external unit. I don't like the idea of having to worry with finding room on my desk and UPS for another external unit and it's plug.
Regardless, the mini (either unit) would live in my entertainment center. When not serving streaming video to the TV it would be acting as a file server (and email, http, wiki and so on if I go server version).
I can see why some people are wondering why they added and SD card slot. I do not know if I would use that much. I can see where it could be useful to some people depending on their situation. |
