Mac mini in Short Supply Ahead of Refresh?
Thursday, June 3, 2010
Posted by: Glenn
AppleInsider is reporting that supplies of the Mac mini are dwindling ahead of a possible refresh to the computer.
Supply of Apple's existing Mac mini lineup has become increasingly constrained over the past two weeks as the company prepares to introduce refreshed models that may serve as a harbinger for some new I/O technology on the Mac.
The shortage has been verified four times over by AppleInsider, which has received numerous reports that suggest the constraints are indicative of new models on the horizon, rather than intermittent delays resulting from the onset of the back-to-school buying season, which sometimes sees Apple curb the flow of Macs to its distribution channels in favor of filling large orders to universities.
We've heard some of the same whispers over the last couple weeks, but have nothing solid to report at this time. We do believe the next update will, at the least, bring the MiniDisplay Port up to the latest spec allowing for audio to be passed through the port. Other rumors have suggested updated graphics and the addition of an HDMI port in place of the current Mini-DVI port.

Hopefully the Mac mini will also get the nVidia 320M. It would be nice to get 4 GiB RAM standard with support for up to 8 GiB. And finally an option for SSD would be interesting too.
Let's just hope it'll still have the dual monitor support, five USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 800 port and 10/100/1000 Ethernet.
Oh, and the same form factor, of course. I don't want to keep two sizes of Mac mini mounts in inventory. _________________ Mac mini 2010 (Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz/8 GiB)

| I already want one for HTPC. Just as long as it has audio support. |

If you purchased it online from the apple store they may take a return even if you are past the 2 weeks. Say something like once the credit clears you are going to need a macbook or a macbook pro and will order a different mac in a week or so after the credit comes back. Then if the new mini comes out order the mini instead. Blame your wife if you want say she can't make her mind up. Do not blame the wife if you are with a female clerk. Don't feel guilty Apple just sold 2,000,000 iPads. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

Not really beyond 14 days. Unless you bought it from someone other than Apple and their poilcy is longer. |

I'd only ever place my money on an incremental update, so here's my wager:
Video: DisplayPort with audio sounds very likely, and perhaps the asymmetrical pairing of one DisplayPort and one mini-DVI port will be replaced by 2 DisplayPorts. No change of graphics card.
CPU: Apple could bump the slower/faster Mini option from 2.26/2.53GHz to 2.66/2.8GHz, but I think it's more likely that the 2.26 will be axed and the slower/faster choice will be 2.53 or 2.66GHz.
HDD: Another increase in capacity, but no SSD.
Memory: No change. _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

One day your iMac i5 wont be the latest "version" or offering from Apple, but it will probably be quite a long time before it is completely "obsolete."
On Topic - I would consider buying one as HTPC if it had HDMI out, over on Mac Rumors, however, they are saying a new ATV is coming with an OS similar to iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad OS-4, that might make the ATV a little more appealing... _________________ --Marcus

| After mulling it over, I think losing the FW800 would be the worst loss that has a good chance of happening. Hopefully this rumor proves true sooner rather than later, as I've been holding out for months now. |

I would be completely happy with C2D 2,5 GHz + 4GB RAM and nVidia 320M as base model, but as I know apple the base will be a 2,4 GHz CPU + 2GB RAM _________________ Mac Mini 2,53 GHz, 8GB RAM, 80GB X-25 M SSD+1TB HDD
