New MacBook Pros Support Audio Over Mini DisplayPort
Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Ars Technica is reporting that the new MacBook Pros released today support the pass-through of audio and video over the Mini DisplayPort. The Mini DisplayPort standard has always supported this functionality, but this is the first time Apple has decided to enable the audio half of the equation on a Mac. All the end-user really needs is a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter that supports audio. You know, like one from Kanex or Monoprice.
"Apple confirmed to Ars that the just-updated MacBook Pros will pass both video and audio signals to an HDTV or receiver when using an miniDP to HDMI adapter. Apple sells one such adapter from Griffin online, though alternative from suppliers such as Monoprice are also available. Apple doesn't have any plans at this time to make its own adapter, contrary to earlier speculation."
So, one can only hope that the Mac mini is next on the list to receive this treatment from Apple. It sure would make things easier on all you Mac mini-based HTPC users out there. Then again, I guess that rumored HDMI port wouldn't be shabby either.

| I don't get Apple sometimes. Why wasn't this just there from the start? And why can't it be added now through a driver update or something? It's crazy! |

because, if it was there from the start, or was available through a driver update, they wouldn't have something new to sell to you...
but i agree. _________________ 13" MBP 2.4GHz, 4GB, 250GB

My guess is that the Mac Mini update was already decided upon and developed before the HDMI became so wide spread in LCD TV's, probably just after Christmas last year. Apple was thinking traditional computer monitors via DVI all the way, and of course their own monitors for the DP. The whole LCD TV explosion and HDMI caught them off-guard. _________________ Retired: Altair 8800, PET, TI 99/4A, Apple II

| Good news, I just wish they would think about those of us with older Mini DisplayPort-based Macs. It seems like audio could be enabled if they wanted. |

Not necessarily. It depends if the audio circuitry (hardware) that's necessary is actually present - quite likely it isn't. _________________ Martin at HeadSpin HD now on Blu-ray |

According to the product pages linked above, those adapters do not support audio. The Monoprice page specifically says:
*NOTE* This product does NOT support audio for the 2010 MacBook that outputs audio through the Mini DisplayPort.
So does anyone know what adapters DO support the new audio option? |
