Apple Releases QuickTime Player 7.6.6 for Snow Leopard
Monday, May 10, 2010

Apple has released QuickTime Player 7.6.6 for Snow Leopard via their Software Update utilty and website. I don't see a list of specific changes for this update, but QuickTime Player 7 supports older media formats, such as QTVR, interactive QuickTime movies, and MIDI files in Snow Leopard. It also accepts QuickTime 7 Pro registration codes, which turn on QuickTime Pro functions. It should also be noted that QuickTime Player 7 will be installed in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder. QuickTime Player 7.6.6 for Snow Leopard weighs in at 10.65MB and requires Mac OS X 10.6.3 or later.

That was for Leopard, but I would assume the security content is the same.

Interesting - previous QT7 downloads have been 40...50 MB. This one is ~11 MB!

As a video user, I need QT7 for export conversions and working with Flip4Mac etc. Anyone know how/why QTX doesn't have these functions, meaning Apple (and we users) have to keep both versions (QT7 and QTX) around and updated? Seems mad to me.

Why QT7? I have QT10 installed. Is this an old one updated for old machine?

I was about to ask that very same question.

QT7 does a lot of things that QTX doesn't do, such as playback of animated GIFs, MIDI files, etc. The Pro version also has a lot of exporting options.

I like QT 7 much better than QT X -- It works better with HD playback, and also, its controls don't pop over the video. It also allows you to see the frame rate instead of the time, and every time you pause, the playback controls don't pop up over the video.

Ageed. I'd still like to know why they haven't put the "export" and "Pro" features into QTX, so they could do away with QT7.

The fact that they're still updating QT7 shows they know it's still essential for applications.
