There's a new series called Life coming on the Discovery Channel tomorrow night. It's from the makers of Planet Earth and looks pretty cool. It should also look great in HD like Planet Earth. I'm going to tune in before The Pacific starts on HBO. It starts at 8:00pm.

Thanks for the heads up, luckily for us Discovery Canada is showing it. Seems very interesting. The Home page even encourages you to buy the Blu-ray. Hope they don't mind I'll just set the PVR for this one Smile

It's been airing here in Canada for a while. I watched a few episodes and was amazed. I didn't realize it was by the Planet Earth guys. Now I know why it was so amazing.

It's stuff like this that makes HD worthwhile.

I agree documentaries which have high production value showing views that actually warrant High Definition. The same old sets on some sitcoms and as much as I hate to say it the average sports game does not really show off HD's full potential.

FYI - Although I have cable, I don't really watch anything live. I mostly PVR it so if something new comes out I don't necessarily know. Bad huh? Then again I'm mainly a Windows user so that may explain things Razz

It's been on for a least a month. I think I recorded 4 or so episodes. Bats, fish, birds I can't remember the others.

We get things before the US all the time ie. we had the Volvo XC70 and "Worst Driver" series first. However we don't always get good stuff before the US first, and if we do it's usually very expensive or crippled. Maybe we got it first because of the "Commonwealth" connection or most likely US Discovery had more good programming then we did so we could launch it earlier. Got to love the CRTC "Canadian Content" rule.

You guys are certainly responsible for a lot of the comedy talent out there. Smile

What is the CRTC "Canadian Content" rule?

Well comedy that would describe my Life. Life is a great nature documentary somewhat more realistic than the somewhat before my times but still great for their time but not exactly factual Walt Disney True Life Adventures Smile

Depending on the licence granted (I think they have specialty/"normal" etc) class licence a certain percentage of the content shown must be "Canadian" this includes shows filmed in Canada. So sometimes we'll get low budget shows like "Canada's Worst Handyman" made not necessarily because they're rating killers but because the channel doesn't have enough Canadian programming. If watching an American channel that's showing the same show as a Canadian channel we'll get the Canadian channel overriding the show on the American channel meaning we may not see a new episode on time etc.

Back on topic Life is 10 episodes, the Brits got to see it before us last year so we can't be too smug Smile

It's the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. It's the Canadian equivalent of the United States FCC. They do in fact create and enforce Canadian content policies, so your guess is pretty darn close. We sort of love and hate the CRTC. They help Canada retain it's culture and arts, but they also sort of force it down our throats.

So I was quoting from memory

For those who trust wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_content

Under section 2 - Television

Requirements for specialty channels and premium television services — channels available only on cable and satellite — often differ greatly from those of broadcast stations. Most long-established specialty channels are expected to devote at least 50% of airtime to Cancon, while category 2 digital channels and most premium services have much lower restrictions. However, specialty channels are allowed to take part in the advertising incentives.

Oprah's voice was a little annoying, but the show itself was really cool. The slow motion shots (like in Planet Earth) always amaze me. I can't imagine the patience, luck and skill to get those shots on film. I can't even get pictures of the squirrels in our the backyard. Laughing
