|
|
Well it's time to expand my network. I ran the wire for the Mini and DVR (DTV has a single built in switch which was nice), but combined with our 360, and two XP boxes I've exceeded the 4 ports on my AirPort Extrme. My hope is to finish running the network wire to my iMac.
I'd like to get a new gigabit switch, I've read some mixed reviews but curious if anyone here has any recommendations or what to avoid.
Thanks! _________________ iMac 24" 2.4 GHz 4GB | Logitech S530 | Z-2300 speakers | NewerTech Guardian MAXimus RAID

I don't use any wireless.
[cable modem] one port in one port out
[d-link dgl-4100] one port in four out I use 1 of the 4 output ports. I could hook up 3 more cause 3 ports are empty.
[d-link dgs-2208] one port in eight ports out. I use 3 computers 1 printer 1 nas .
with room for 3 more hookups. this lets all 5 pieces have linkage of one kind or another. This is fast enough to watch
a netflix movie on one computer
a you tube on another computer
and hulu on the third computer _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

I have a Netgear GS105 which works a treat between all the Mac. I leave the PCs on the old 100mBit section of the network on a Belkin router. _________________ Phil

Good idea Cypher, may isolate the non-gigabit items; 360, XP boxes and just keep the Mini, iMac tied to the Extreme. Need to run another cable to the DVR as I'm sure its not a gigabit switch built in that. _________________ iMac 24" 2.4 GHz 4GB | Logitech S530 | Z-2300 speakers | NewerTech Guardian MAXimus RAID

I've had good luck with D-Link as well, also run a TP-Link as well which is good for an inexpensive product. TP-Link is a self professed "Chinas's #1 Choice". One thing I've noticed is the TP-Link products seem to cope with heat well.
Kind of unrelated, with Netgear the only problem I ever had was with an older Netgear Wireless G adapter on a TIVO that would get hot and overheat, requiring it to be placed by the floor register to cool off.
Good luck, an unmanaged switch should be ok with the amount of devices you're using. _________________ My cat themed collection:
