Me either. And like I said before, Apple doesn't have a real good track record as of late. |

I'm not going to buy a first-generation one. I'm going to wait about a year for them to improve it first. _________________ 2.0 Ghz 2007 Mac mini (120 GB HD, 2 GB RAM, 10.6.4)

Using one will probably push you over the fence. During all the initial reviews, each reviewer said you have to use the device to truly appreciate it.
I think this along with the desire for apps that are developed specifically for designed for the iPad will make those of us on the fence owners.
Apple's very good at making products that we never knew we needed |

| It's hard resisting new Apple stuff that looks as nice as the iPad. That's why I'm going to try my best to stay out of the Apple store. I really want one with a camera or iSight and don't want to regret my purchase a couple months or so from now. Assuming they add one in the next update. |

that's funny.
You might have to stop using the internet and watching TV too. We'll probably see a few ads. |

I'm most anxious to see what happens on that front. The native apps from Apple just look awesome. It will also be interesting to see where the developers price them in relation to what they've already done for the iPhone.
I forgot to mention something else that might interest me before. That would be sheet music. You put your iPad up on a music stand and that's pretty compelling for musicians and students. |

I was pretty ambivalent about the iPad, but as time passes, I'm thinking up more and more ways in which it could make its mark on the way that we live our lives.
I don't know how many of you guys remember this, but back in the day (mid 90s) Adobe used to bundle a PDF with Acrobat Reader that showcased what was possible with Acrobat. The thing I remember most vividly about this PDF was a clip-art picture of Big Ben; when you clicked on the picture, the speakers on your computer went "Bong!".
It's a small thing, but it made an impression on me because I'd just graduated from a mechanical engineering course whose textbooks were the most mind-numbingly tedious publications you could possibly have the misfortune to spend £30 on. And yet with this newfangled PDF, here was a way of publicising information that not only contained text and pictures, but could also make noises and play animations.
So will students buy an iPad to read the electronic versions of their textbooks? Yeah, they will. But things are really going to get interesting when those electronic textbooks stop pretending to be paper textbooks and start becoming iPad apps that teach students using sounds, animations and video clips, and that show students how to tackle difficult exam questions, present them with sample questions to answer and tell them whether they got them right or where they went wrong.
Such a prospect reminds me of Ted Nelson's 1976 description of the soon-to-happen microcomputer revolution... "Those unforgettable next two years" _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

As soon as I'm finished some more training for work I'll get one. That should be in the middle of May. By then I'll have seen the reviews and heard of the newest iPad specific apps. The Apple store might even have some refurbished models available by then. My Mac Book was a refurbished unit and it arrived in perfect condition. There would be no way to tell if it was a new or refurbished model other than the box and serial number.
I intend to sell my Mac Book and get an iPad. I'll use my Vista computer with a dual boot into Linux. Linux will allow some cool things and Vista will allow me to continue to use Netflix.
The iPad will allow me to get the full iWork suite for $30 instead of $69 or whatever it costs. I'll probably skip buying numbers until it is needed. Right now I'm saving links to sites that sell apps that will be useful. I intend to only buy apps that are specifically designed for the iPad.
Music notation is definitely something I want to do with the iPad. There is an electronic sheet music display and storage device sold today that costs about $2000. It is bigger than an iPad but all it does is store and display sheet music. It can be tapped or set up with different tempos for each musical piece. The iPad has greater potential even though it has a smaller screen.

Was that an ad for the iPad or an oversized iPod touch? I wasn't sure until the end. |

I'm still looking forward to getting one in my hands, but I wasn't particularly impressed with the ad. Maybe it's because we have seen most of that stuff in action. I didn't really see anything new. Even the music, books and movies were the same for the most part. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

While that would be great, it's a ways off.
In the mean time, I honestly cannot see students taking too much to the iPad for books (yet). At least for me, I find myself making note and highlighting information constantly in books, and unless Apple develops support for this, I cannot see this replacing textbooks. _________________ 13" MBP 2.4GHz, 4GB, 250GB

I'm the same way. I use about 5 different colors of highlighters. I write notes and I uses sticky notes as tabs to quickly reference pages. The more beat up my textbook looks, the more I have learned.
It would be great if a a stylus becomes available for the iPad. |
