I just bought a new-for-2012 refurbished iMac.

I'm going to try out the built-in speakers, but I'm also going to look around at external speakers and over-the-ear headphones. I plan to do video editing (Final Cut Studio), audio editing (FCS, plus GarageBand and other apps) and playing tutorials like Lynda.com.

I'd like to hear from other late-model Macintosh computer owners about what they use for external speakers and over-the-ear headphones to get good sound quality. What do you use, equipment-wise? What do you use it for?

Thanks in advance.

No external speakers for me, just the ones built into the TB Display; so no ideas from me on that. As far as over the ear headphones, I have the Bose noise canceling jobs and love them to death. Probably not acoustically the greatest, but love the closest thing to a cocoon feeling. Use them a bunch on airplanes as well. Love them.

Hopefully somebody with more audiophile interest can give you some other ideas.

Philiparcario is quite the diehard audiophile, perhaps he can provide some suggestions (or build you something Smile ). You should however state your budget as there is such a wide variety of choices.

I like Audioengine products for external speakers.

2's $200
5+'s $400

Under $100, I'd look at Logitech

I do video editing with FCP7 on a Mac Pro and a Mac Mini. I run the stereo analog audio out via a 3.5mm-to-RCA/phono lead to a basic AV Hifi Receiver (70wpc) and feed that into a pair of PMC DB1S nearfield monitors, or a pair of Sennheiser HD650 headphones if I need to use phones. The HD650s are over-the-ear, but open-backed.

All sounds pretty good to me. I use the source selector on the AV Receiver to switch between the two Macs. I always planned to change over to use the optical outputs from the Macs, but never got around to changing things, as it always sounded fine.

In GBP: the Yamaha receiver was about 100, the DB1Ss (used) were about 300 and the HD650s were about 200.

I use the Genius 3.1 set up with a small subwoofer which presents decent bass and over all good sound. It is not expensive at all. About $25.00 for the whole system. I never did use earphones.
