Looks like Apple is going with upgraded GPU even if it means keeping the Core 2 Duo processors in the Mac Mini. Given the alternative of Intel's integrated GPU units, that is probably the least of a bunch of bad alternatives. |
The GPU included in I3 and I5 cpus seems to be rated fairly close to AMD integrated graphics, see AnandTech on 890GX. That isn't to say some form of non-intel graphics wouldn't be nice. I tend to think that the Mini has another bump or two to go in C2D before it gets switched to I3 or I5. But you never know. |

I think it's unlikely with the chipset being discussed, but that would be a nightmare. Let's not even think about it.
No, I think Apple will stick with a C2D and Nvidia for the next update. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

gpu of 9400 and a 3.06 cpu would be a nice machine. I Tend to agree they are not looking to stick in a quad core even if they jack the mini the 3/4 of an inch That I have been asking for. 2 hdds' and a blu-ray would be nice. They need to get a hdmi to fight off the zino from dell. dell's little machine is nice it has a 3.5 inch hdd and an hdmi hook up and handles blu- ray although it is costly when fully hooked up. It can run 1k maxed. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

I think this would be tough from thermal/power point of view. Quad core is a higher power envelope than dual core. Iirc, original mini C2D cpus were 45W. There are a couple of intel quad cores down at that level (e.g. Q9000), but they aren't cheap. |

the 27 inch imac I just purchased has a 3.06 cpu and an updated gpu
ATI Radeon HD 4850:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4850
Type: GPU
Bus: PCIe
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 512 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x944a
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-B9110C-425
EFI Driver Version: 01.00.383
Displays:
iMac:
Resolution: 2560 x 1440
Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Built-In: Yes
Connection Type: DisplayPort
Display Connector:
Status: No Display Connected
This iMac pulls 145 watts on a kill a watt meter. I am running the screen
one dongle is added it is a elgato hybrid. 145 watts is more then the mini brick puts out but the mini does not drive a lcd screen. realistic thinking is a mini brick of 110 watts as much as they want. maybe a 130 watt brick. so I wonder what can they max as a mini cpu/gpu. a 9400 gpu and a 306 cpu can go in a 15 inch mb pro so they can most likely get them in a new mini. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

Ack, sorry. I didn't realise I'd left the end of the previous sentence.
The 3.06 CPU (T9900?) is rated at 35W, so you're quite correct, there should be no problem squeezing it into a mini.
I was expanding on your "not looking to stick in a quad core..." by thinking that would be tricky from power viewpoint, at least while intel quad cores are typically up at 65W+ TDP. |

Would be great as one does nog have to connect through that stupid adapter anymore as the cables supporting this are so much easier to find. Actually I even sold such a cable which I did not use not so long ago! Also one can connect even with some screens with an single HDMI cable directly! _________________ ___________________Jim©

woohoo! This would be the clincher for me to finally retire my 5 yr old mini to an itunes server.
I am actually needing to buy a new tv right now and it has been bugging me that most panels are now dropping VGA support, or, putting it on the side.
This way, I the mini will finally be able to function as a 'real' integrated HTPC.
I only hope that the port is not purposely crippled and is a 'full' HDMI port, ie, also allowing feedback control, look out for the 3rd party app developers jumping on that! Imagine the Mini being able to be switched on from a connected TV remote control, or the other way round
Anxiously looking forward to this one! _________________ Intel 2.4Ghz/4G Ram/1TB HDD/Server MacMini

HDMI on Mini=I could not be any LESS interested in such an "upgrade"....
USB 3= Don't see it happening anytime soon on the Mini....
Bottom line, no reason to upgrade-yet |
