Greetings Mac users ,
I have been using my Mac Mini for a few months now and I have found it very accommodating to my novice abilities. What an amazing computer in such a
diminutive package.

I have a question I would like to put forth for your consideration and assistance.
I own a Sony video camera and a Sony voice recorder and I can not seem to
get them recognized . I have tried to do this in i-photo and i-movie.

Has anyone out there had a similar experience and uncovered a solution?

thanx for your time and knowlege , analog Question

Welcome!

I would imagine that the Sony camera would connect via their special Firewire 400 connector.

Anyway, what are the model numbers of the camera and the voice recorder?

I have a Sony Digital Video camera and I don't remember having any problems getting iMovie to recognise it when it was connected.

I haven't tried it recently though (ie with Snow Leopard)

Thank you both , Smithcraft and Cypher , for responding to my query.
My Mac mini is the (A1283) and has (1) fire wire 800 port and 5 usb ports.
The Sony video camera is a (DCR-HC42) . The Sony voice recorder is/was a
(ICD-P520)
I initially tried connecting these both via supplied USB cables with no recognition.
I then purchased a Belkin 6-port hi-speed USB 2.0 and fire wire hub for desktop convenience . I used an adapter cable fire wire 800 - fire wire 400 , (9pin-6pin ) to connect the mac mini to the hub and then a fire wire - d/v
(6 pin - 4 pin ) to connect the belkin hub to DCR-HC 42 camera dock . I was again unable to have it recognized.
When I connected the voice recorder , via USB again , the recorder was not recognized and then the recorder ceased to work at all. I tried disconnecting it and swapping out the batteries with no results.
Soo I have returned the hub and I have ordered a fire wire 800 - d/v (9 pin - 4 pin ) cable to try a direct connect (camera base to mac mini ) as my next try.
I really liked the fit and design of the belkin hub , but it did not function for my purposes . I was told that the issue may have been that it was an unpowered hub.

seeking the answer , analog

Video from a miniDV camera will need a FireWire (NOT USB) connection. The 9-4pin Firewire cable you have ordered should do the trick.

With your camera connected and powered up (and in "VCR", not "Camera" mode), look under the Apple Menu: About This Mac: More Info: FireWire to see if your Mac can see the camera.

Agreed. I have the same Sony Mini-DV camcorder as Cypher (DCR-TRV22E) and it will not talk to Apple computers thru a USB cable. I ordered a 9-pin-to-4-pin cable and it works perfectly.

Many thanks to Moobile and JohnnyBoy for the votes of confidence on my in- transit cable!
Can anyone recommend a good , powered , stackable hub for the Mac mini? Would like to have a fire wire 800 and a couple usb ports on the front for
mobile devices.
Also open for suggestions on proper program to load voice recorder files to.
(monaural recording , o-250mb , 220 - 7000hz) i-Tunes?

seeking info...................analog

p.s. found "USBFireWire.com" a good source for hard to find and custom
cable solutions.
