Apple Intros iTunes 10 With Ping
Wednesday, September 1, 2010
Posted by: Glenn
Apple today introduced iTunes 10 with Ping, a new music-oriented social network for following your favorite artists and friends to discover what music they're talking about, listening to and downloading. iTunes Ping lets you post your thoughts and opinions, your favorite albums and songs, the music you've downloaded from iTunes, plus view concert listings and tell your friends which concerts you plan to attend. iTunes 10 also features HD TV show rentals for 99 cents an episode and AirPlay wireless music playback.
"iTunes is the number one music community in the world, with over 160 million iTunes users in 23 countries, and now we’re adding social networking with Ping," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "With Ping you can follow your favorite artists and friends and join a worldwide conversation with music's most passionate fans."

This is pretty cool. I wish I had something like this when I was a kid. Music truly was the foundation of many of my social networks.
I'm a little bit surprised with where Apple is taking us with this, but it makes sense. Although I think this would be a phenomenal plugin for social networking sites like Facebook, there are lots of people that just want to share musical interests and not all the other junk that comes with traditional social networking sites. I suspect if this works well, movies/tv shows will soon follow. |

Why did they take away the color and make everything a bland greyish tone? |

Already there is Last.fm doing the same thing. One just needs to install Last.fm plugin in order to update what he or she was playing on iTunes player. And Ping as a name for social thingy reminds me a bit of Ping.fm However it is not bad to have such a software integrated in your player. I am already in. |

Theres not a lot I like about the new interface.
- The new icon doesn't look very Mac like, it's pretty plain and boring.
- The lack of colours in the User Interface was a stupid decision. Everything is so drab and uniform, the colours aid you in picking a playlist from a smartlist etc
- The positioning of the new close/minimize/resize controls doesn't comply with Apples own UI guidelines of keeping things standard.
- The playlist disclosure now show up as Show and Hide
- No way to minimise the Store or Library sections
- Something about the table view isn't right. I can't put my finger on it but I don't like how it looks. I think it's the selection tick and lack of column lines
- I'm not interested in yet another social network, and I'm sure nobody would be overly interested in what I'm listening too.

Who knows. Maybe it is the next default placement of these three buttons. Would love to see Safari with tabs on top and vertical controls in the left |

to sort out the close minimize buttons and return them to the standard oreintation
Close iTunes and open a terminal window. Enter the following line
| Code: | | defaults write com.apple.iTunes full-window -boolean YES |
to revert to the vertical traffic light
| Code: | | defaults remove com.apple.iTunes full-window |
another gripe about iTunes 10
I believe Ping requires you to share you itunes account email address. I'm not sure that a good idea. _________________ Phil

App store preview images no longer load. That's pretty stupid.
EDIT: Never mind. For some reason, it wasn't working and now suddenly it is. Weird. |

| Has anybody else noticed that iTunes 10 adds 10 to 15 seconds to the boot time? On my 2010 13 inch macbook pro it takes 10 seconds longer to boot, on my early 2009 mini it adds nearly 15 seconds. |

I like the new "less colorful" interface. I use the graphite scheme; system wide. It goes well with that. Never was a fan of the somewhat gaudy Tiger scheme. _________________ Mac Book 2.1 Ghz (Penryn) 10.6.7 4Gb DDR2

Me to I like everything about this new Itunes. I like the new multiple speaker volume adjustments for airplay or airtunes. |
