Monday, February 1, 2010
Posted by: Glenn

The MPlayer OSX Extended and VLC players were updated for users over the weekend. The latest version of MPlayer OSX Extended, Revision 13, brings redesigned player, preference and inspector windows, interactive audio and video equalizers, and support for multiple player instances. It also includes numerous bug fixes and smaller improvements. The update weighs in at 21MB and requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later. The latest version of VLC, v1.0.5, basically includes improved support for the 2009 Apple Remote. This update weighs in at 30.6MB and also requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

So happy to hear that VLC development for Mac OS X is not dead.
However I saw an interesting tweet from its developers: http://twitter.com/videolan/status/8344142495
Anybody has some info on it?

I believe they are just in the process of rewriting VLC for the Mac. The code name for this project is Lunettes.

I'm not sure VLC for the Mac was ever dead. I think they were just short on developers and sort of put a call out for help.

I would hate to see VLC go though. I still use it more than QTX for watching movies.

I'm glad to see VLC for OS X still kicking. I would be very sad if it ever died off. Here's hoping this new project is successful!

I'm a vlc guy all the way but one way that mplayer truly trumps all other players in with scrubbing. Mind you in most situations you won't scrub much but when I need to I always pull out mplayer.
