Monoprice Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter with USB Audio
Friday, August 7, 2009
Posted by: Glenn
Remember that Kanex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter with USB audio we mentioned a couple weeks ago? Well, it looks like Monoprice will be coming out with a similar adapter of their own. According to the product page on their website, this adapter utilizes the power of USB to combine the benefits of Mini DisplayPort video with USB digitally synthesized audio and combines it into a single, convenient HDMI signal. No other specifics are given, but we expect it to basically look and function like the Kanex adapter shown on the right. The Monoprice adapter is currently being listed as backordered, but should be available soon for around $37 dollars.

I'm going to order either this one or the one from Kanex as soon as they become available. I know they only have analog audio, but I have no other audio ports available for HDMI. It's the last HDMI port available on the TV. I don't have a receiver going with this Mac mini or TV either. That's being used with the primary Mac mini setup in the den. That's right, we are a two Mac mini household. |

| Does anyone know if this would work on the new MacBook Pro's as well, or is it a different display adapter? |

| Does anyone sell a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter or cable yet? I have a new Dell display coming with a DisplayPort and just wondered. |

I will be getting one also. I need a second audio output from the Mini to the tv for when I want to listen to audio through the tv. I've got my digital out going to the receiver for when I want big sound. I was just going to get a USB audio switch thing, but for about the same price I can get this one and cut down on my cables in the back of the tv and at least kind of have my hdmi input function at is is meant to. _________________ Mercury TiBook 400MHz, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD, Airport

I wouldn't mind having one for my MBA. But why, oh why, didn't Apple just add support for audio through the Mini-DisplayPort? I always get mad thinking about that one. |

Because Apple does as Apple chooses and we still buy them. _________________ Mercury TiBook 400MHz, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD, Airport

...I still think it would make the life of many easier if Apple considered adding an HDMI output to their computers. It might affect AppleTV sales, but I don't see how it would hurt them if someone bought a Mac Mini over an AppleTV since now they can transfer video/audio to their TV/Surround system with more ease.
It's like CaliforniaMini says though, Apple does as it wishes and we still buy their products. |

So whats the deal with these thngs? Both this one and the Apogee one. They were announced months ago and still not available. Its not like its a big technological breakthrough that needs to be announced months or years in advance. Its just a connector. Monoprice now says September 30th, but this keeps getting pushed back. Probably the same manufacturer making both of them and having problems or something. Grrrr, I want one already so I can at least complete the physical install of my HTPC, although I still have some performance and software tweaking to do. _________________ Mercury TiBook 400MHz, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD, Airport

| Anybody know if there are any issue simultaneously outputting audio via analog audio and USB? My girlfriend has an iMac that I'd like to hook up to the entertainment center, but I don't want to loose functionality of the iMacs speakers. |
