Amex Digital Intros Blu-ray Kit for 2009 Mac Minis

Amex Digital has announced the release of their BD-UG1 Mac mini Blu-ray drive upgrade kit for current generation Mac minis. The 4X slot-loading SATA drive allows users to read and write Blu-ray discs with the likes of Roxio Toast and playback commercial movies in Windows with Boot Camp. Users can also sit back and dream of the day when full support comes over to the Mac. A day when the "bag of hurt" turns into a bag of HD delight. The BD-UG1 Mac mini Blu-ray drive upgrade kit from Amex Digital is priced at $199.

| I really wish that Apple would get off their high horse and add support for BR. The combo packs of BR, DVD and digital copy have me buying more than ever. It has also driven home the point that DVD, digital copy and whatever 720 crap Apple is offering (only so that it can be played on ATV) looks like crap in comparison. It's hard even watching them after you've seen the same movie in BR. |

| I posted about this earlier this morning in the HTPC thread. Prices are getting much nicer, all we need now is official support from Apple. |

| Who else is selling SATA slot-loaders here in the US? I mean, in the same price range. I just might pick one up for Windows 7 in Boot Camp. |

I honestly thought the support would be here by now.
The Blu-ray standard is on better ground now and picking up steam, so that might bode well for the forward. That being said, they are in the business of selling downloads. It doesn't seem like they want us to have any choice beyond that. Oh well, I guess that's why they invented Boot Camp. _________________ 2009 Mac mini with 500GB/4GB

MakeMKV allows you to rip blu rays on the Mac side now, so no need of boot camp. I have the Lacie Blu ray external drive coming today or tomorrow to test it out |

Sweet! To be honest, I haven't heard much about using MakeMKV in OS X. Please let me know how it works out!!! I so want to get into this.
Any reason why you went with the LaCie? That's a pretty expensive drive. Even the externals from OWC cost less. |

I've heard Apple will never support Blu Ray because it'll die out too fast -- everything will eventually be done over the Internet. _________________ 2.0 Ghz 2007 Mac mini (120 GB HD, 2 GB RAM, 10.6.4)

Actually I am a tech for a school department and we are getting the drive for data archiving, but we can only buy from places that except Purchase Orders. The place we bought it from gave us a really good discount too. I would have liked to get the OWC with Firewire 800 though.

Until we get faster download speeds without caps, downloads will look nothing like blu ray, too much compression going on to get them to a reasonable size for downloading, and you loose the HD audio tracks. I like the occasional AppleTV HD rental on stuff I just want to see once, but compared to blu, its way behind. |

That's cool, I just wondered. It looks like a nice drive. I was also thinking about buying a barebones LG or Liteon player and throwing in this Macally enclosure from Newegg. I think the drives from OWC with firewire are really, really nice, but that's a little more than I want to spend.

I don't think Blu-ray is going to die anytime soon. There will always be an HD format that doesn't require the storage of which downloads require. I mean, if that makes sense. |

Speaking of Blu-ray's, when I went to the Apple store yesterday (to buy the new mouse), two Mac Geniuses were actually talking about Mac's and blu-ray support. ...it didn't sound like they were hopeful of Apple supporting BD's anytime soon.
Here's an article that made me think of selling my BD's too:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/181345/best_buy_movie_downloads_is_the_death_of_the_dvd_nigh.html?tk=nl_tex_h_cbintro
...but I'm not going to rush, my Windows machine supports BD's. Anyone know why no third party company makes BD software for OS X? On Windows, it's third party companies creating the software. |
