Ha...
Every time I think Apple's licensing agreement is a b*tch, I remember what poor olde MS users have to go through.
I noted the guy putting up the blog pointed out he is not a lawyer.
But on that note, people installing W7 might be advised to hire a lawyer so as to understand the legal limits of the license they are buying...
God, what's with MS screwing their customers...

This is what Aqua and I take great issue with:

Connected to that, most people don''t realize that only the top two versions of Windows 7 (read most expensive) have the XP environment built into them.
The general version does not have it included.

No wonder the Pro & Ultimate versions are so costly.
Your effectively paying for 2 systems.

I like Windows pretty well, but this is a load of crap. The OS is way over priced. They should practically give it away to anyone who bought the POS full version of Vista. Seriously,I have nearly $500 invested in Vista & 7...that's just stupid high, and I probably should have my head examined for even buying it.
I know this is remedial, but I got pretty irritated when I saw that you didn't have the choice of putting the control panel in classic view...yeah, I know it's not a biggie, but I like being able to go into classic view. They charge a small fortune for it,and then don't give you the choice to do something as small as this. |

These articles point out the nonsense of Microsoft. It would be much easier and they probably would have less staff/legal costs, just to make one consumer version of each OS. They could learn from Mac on this.
Microsoft should just offer the consumer one inexpensive such as the FPP.
| Quote: | | Retail Full Package Product (FPP) This is the most expensive retail product of all and includes the fewest restrictions of any Windows version. You can install it on any PC, new or old. You can boot from the installation media and set up Windows 7 on a PC with a squeaky clean hard drive without having to jump through a single hoop. You can install it on any Mac, in a virtual machine or using Boot Camp. You can install it in a virtual machine in Windows as well. You can even use it as an upgrade for a previous edition (although you pay more for the privilege than you need to). |
I wonder what versions others here loaded on their Macs so far? _________________ '08 MacMini C2D/2.0/RAM4GB

| Not a fan boy either way, but I don't see what the big issue is here when it comes to upgrading. I did a total clean install of Windows 7 from an upgrade disc ($49) without any trouble. All you need to do is install, takes the disc out, apply all updates and register. I have a license from a previous version, so it doesn't really matter about the agreement. What are they going to do, come and arrest me? You know, Snow Leopard users must own a licensed copy of Leopard as well if we are going by the book here. This just all seems like a none issue to me. If anything, one could say that Apple was dumping on users with Snow Leopard. Try installing Snow Leopard on a PPC machine. I don't really blame them for that either though. At some point Apple and Microsoft needed to break away from the past with upgrades. |

But that's the whole point Scooper.
A clean install from an upgrade disk is only available to registered Vista users.
Everyone else who isn't using Vista (aka XP, W2000 etc) has to pay retail.
That means, for all non Vista users, there is no $49 cheap upgrade option...(well there might be with a hack of the MBR & BIOS settings..or wit ha crack, but I am not going to go there)....
Beyond that, the same XP & Windows 2000 users et al, can't retain files or settings etc in the process of installing W7. This means hours of down time to reinstall software & drivers that may or may not be present with W7.
And when that is done, non Vista users have to reinstall all their personal files.
Like I said in a previous post, for any Windows user, (Other than Vista) this means hours of lugging coal over a mountain top.
As for me. I am currently writing this on a W7 Ultimate machine.
In the end I partitioned my drive into 3 sectors. One for Data, & one for XP Pro.
Just as well : since W7 has a nasty habit of changing Drive letters without telling you.
So you can put that down as another one of its idiosyncrasies.

Actually, no.
I own a legitimate copy of Windows 3.1 Windows 95, Windows 98 (2 copies) Windows 2000 Pro (3 copies), XP Pro (3 copies), XP Micro (no licence needed) & Windows 7 ultimate ((Evaluation copy).
For all the above, I haven't paid Microsoft a single red cent.

Actually, you probably have. I assume you got all those window licenses by buying a PC from someone, in which case, the price was included in the price of the hardware. The OEM deals with the PC makers are really what drives MS business model. They have never much understood, or been very successful dealing in Retail directly with the customer. Even MS Office is probably sold more as a bundled package than off the shelf. _________________ Retired: Altair 8800, PET, TI 99/4A, Apple II

True,
In one case I bought a copy of Vista for my Dell. (cost $9.00)
But almost all my other PC's I have rescued from a dumpster.
Now that I remember, I also bought two copies of XP-Pro that turned out to be dodgy. (El cheapo disks that cracked the moment I put them into a CD drive).
But as for all the rest of my Windows OS disks...
I have either had them given to me for nix (as in the case of Windows 95, 98, & 2000 Pro) ; downloaded it from the net as in MicroXP or fished an OS out of a industrial bin outside a Pc manufacturer.
(Got Xp-Pro-SP-3 OEM) that way....sweet.

Only more reason for me to keep transitioning to Linux, once I get a Mac I'll essentially only need Microsoft for games. _________________ "You must control your future by taking command of your present, and fixing and learning from your past."

Not even that, if you use WINE with Linux.
Aqua
Ps : your quote.
"When history is forgotten people don't realize when it repeats."
Actually, history never repeats itself. That would mean time is cyclical.
It's not so much that history is repeated, but that the lessons offered by it are forgotten. Therein lies the peril. _________________ Of the four X systems in the world.

Alot of you all keep supporting MS if you keep buying computers with it installed or buying the retail version...how do you think MS got to be a billion dollar company!
Majority of computers sold retail have the cripple version of Windows as have been mention.
I only have it if the current job I have let me install it for work purposes. _________________ G4 Mac Mini | 1.25ghz | 1gb | 40gb | OS X 10.4.11 | 37" Westinghouse HDTV
