Today I replaced the hard drive in my Dad's old Sony PCG-Z1WAMP2 w/ a WD320GB PATA HDD (I think the bad one was an 80)- I had completely forgotten Windows XP Pro only sees ~137GB (?).
My question is: How do I get the rest of the drive to show up? If I recall correctly, there are patches (?), programs like Partition Magic, Casper etc that will let me do partitioning on the boot drive but I don't recall what works best/and easily (if that's even possible). Any suggestions? Advice?
I will greatly appreciate any help anyone has (my Dad too!)
Thank you!

It's been awhile since I've configured XP, but I believe older XP machines had a BIOS partition limit of under 140gb
Check Sony's website for system specs (or manual) it may say if this is a BIOS limit, it may/may not be able to be flashed with a newer version of the BIOS.
Has XP had SP3 installed? You can try using diskpart. Does the drive have to be one partition? You should be able to use Diskmanager and create a 2nd/3rd partition (ie Data) partition.
Haven't used Partition Magic. Hopefully someone can come up with something more helpful. Just giving you something to use in the mean time.
Edit: Also you did format with FAT32 or NTFS, you should format with NTFS and upgrade to the latest Service Pack first, see if diskpart will let you increase the partition to the maximum size for the hdd. Then try the BIOS. _________________ My cat themed collection:

Thanks macmini2010--I just read something about the BIOS limit and will research it further. In the mean time, I'll upgrade to NTFS+SP2 and see what I get
Thanks again! |
