Apple Updates MacBook

Apple today updated its MacBook with a new, durable polycarbonate unibody design featuring a brilliant LED-backlit display, a glass Multi-Touch trackpad and Apple's innovative built-in battery for up to seven hours of battery life. Inheriting technology and design features from the MacBook Pro line, the new MacBook is an ideal consumer notebook for students and new Mac users, and is available for $999.

The new MacBook, for a suggested retail price of $999 (US), includes:
- 13.3-inch widescreen LED-backlit 1280 x 800 glossy display;
- 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3MB shared L2 cache;
- 1066 MHz front-side bus;
- 2GB 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM, expandable to 4GB;
- NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics;
- 250 GB serial ATA hard drive running at 5400 rpm, with Sudden Motion Sensor;
- a slot-load 8x SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW);
- Mini DisplayPort for video output (adapters sold separately);
- built-in AirPort Extreme 802.11n wireless networking and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR;
- Gigabit Ethernet port;
- built-in iSight video camera;
- two USB 2.0 ports;
- one audio line in/out port, supporting optical digital out and analog in/out;
- glass Multi-Touch trackpad;
- built-in, 60WHr lithium polymer battery; and
- 60 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter.

Yeah, for $150 more (student to student cost) the MBP seems like the better deal, even if it comes with less HD memory. Which makes me think they'll be upping that on the MBP soon. Might be a hard sale for some folks, more money and less HD space? I would do it because I don't have that much junk and like the extra MBP features (FW, backlit keyboard, etc)...

yeah the macbook upgrade was very weak only went to 2.26

mini with a boost to 2.66 will kill it. you are better off with a mbp.

I'll hold off judgment until I see one in person, but the new design seems to make them look a little fatter. It also lost firewire, which in my book is never a good thing.

I think the new macbook is very attractively priced relative to the equivalent sized macbook pro. The new macbook is lighter than the old and the standard drive is actually higher capacity than the mbp standard (250 vs 160 ghz). So for $200 less than the mbp, you get a larger drive and you give up 0.2 lb weight, the aluminum finish, a fw 800 port and the SD slot. I'm happy with my mbp, but I think the new macbook is actually a better deal.

It also looks like they went to having one audio port like the 13" MBP. That may or may not be a disappointment for some people.

I agree. The new MacBook White is a better deal than the low end MacBook Pro; you get more for your money. Since the students are buying MacBook's up anyway, this is a good deal for them. I don't think the FW loss is that important in the college market.

I think it's very adequately priced. Yes, things are 'missing', but that's what you get for an entry level model. That said, FOR an entry level model it's a very good machine.
