New Macs minis Get Unboxed and Dissected

Our friends over at Macminicolo have unboxed and posted a hands-on review of the new Mac minis introduced on Tuesday. This also includes a teardown of the new Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server. As many of you know, this model comes with Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server and two 500GB hard drives instead of a SuperDrive. The second hard drive being mounted in the bay that normally contains the SuperDrive in the standard Mac mini. It also features a slighty different case, since a slot isn't needed for the SuperDrive. Beyond that folks, they are the same lovable Mac minis.

The review also mentions something about the new Mac minis unofficially supporting 8GB of RAM, but we just talked with Brian over at Macminicolo and he said they were going to do some more testing this afternoon. I know we talked about this with our friends over at OWC after Apple released new firmware back in August, but they said it wasn't being utilized properly. We'll have to look back into this more since the new Mac minis use the same firmware. In the meantime, enjoy the pictures and review!

So do the '09 Mac minis support 8GB or not? It seems like I've read no, then yes, then no, and maybe. Not that that I can actually afford 8GB. I just want to know if it works or not.

Not that I really expected anything different, but it's nice to finally see the innards of the Mac mini server.

Don't really need the server version, but I'm thinking about buying one, selling the 500GB drives and replacing them with 1TB drives. There should be enough in the top drive bay for a 12.5mm drive since the optical drives are 12.7mm. It's the bottom drive that I'm unsure about. Will a 12.5mm drive fit down in there?

My thinking is no, it won't. So only the top drive could be converted to 12.5 mm 1 TB drive. The bottom would have to remain a 500 GB drive. But Philip is the master HDD specialist so I'm sure he can tell us.

Looks like if someone were able to get their hands on that top hd tray, they would be able to make their own 'server'. Not that it can't be done other ways, this would just seem to simplify things a bit.

YOU can't tell until you buy a server. I may cancel my 2.53 order and buy a server. I have to think it over.
