I am ripping a movie with HandBrake on the old Mac mini for my new iPod. I selected 500 kbps for the average bitrate and 2-pass encoding. The ETA is 03h19m01s for a 2 1/2 hour Title to complete. I am shocked at how long this is going to take. Is this normal? Is 500kps too high of a bitrate? The default was 1000.

A bit off your topic, but are you using the newly customized version of Handbrake?

Download here

Discussed here and here.

Thanks for the links. I'm using the customized version of HandBrake that was on TUAW. I finally got one video to work, but it still took forever to complete. I went ahead and unchecked the 2-pass encoding box. It basically cut the ripping time in half. Maybe this just comes down to the Mac mini not having enough power. Sad

Encoding in h.264 is probably going to take longer than in MPEG-4. Have you tried selecting MPEG-4?

I've tried both. Encoding in MPEG-4 cuts the time down to around an hour compared to three hours for h.264. The problem is when you use MPEG-4 it seems to stall at the end. I need a faster Mac!
