| Very slick. I really like LaCie products. Too bad it doesn't support firewire as well. I prefer daisy chaining when possible. |

Slick indeed, but I'm still waiting on an update of the LaCie mini with firewire 800. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

| Why is there a PC version and a Mac version? The PC version costs less too. I wonder if it's the same drive, minus the Mac software? |

That appears to be the case. |

Personally, even though I have a LaCie from years ago and it's still working well and I like LaCie products, I think this is a better deal.

I don't have either one, but this one from OWC, while nice, fills a different niche than the LaCie one.
The LaCie one can be powered via USB cable alone, while the OWC one requires a power source. The LaCie one is also much smaller, laptop sized, versus the OWC one which is more desktop sized.
Not to say that one is better than the other, they're just meant for different uses. |

What's the point of getting one for a Mac when all Macs have SuperDrives? _________________ 2.0 Ghz 2007 Mac mini (120 GB HD, 2 GB RAM, 10.6.4)

-direct copy from disk to disk
-not all Mac came with Superdrives
-some people want to upgrade to a faster drive
-may be more cost effective than replacing a broking internal superdrive
-keeps heat away from more expensive computers
-some Superdrives are noisy
-ability to have access to a drive while using another
-choice of physical placement of the drive (let's say you have a tower on the ground and you do not want to have to climb under your desk)
I'm sure I could come up with 10 more reasons. |

Some people have MacBook Air's, and those that don't may have a NetBook, both lacking DVD drives. ...and having one that's USB powered beats having one of the bigger ones that need to be powered up. Sure, if you have a MacBook Air, you could get the external SuperDrive from Apple, but it can only be used on the Air, the one from Lacie will work on any Mac and likely, an PC.
Some might have put two HDD's in their Mac Mini too, which would require removing the internal Super Drive.
...I'm just thinking why someone would want this. |

That's a better reason than all of mine combined I'm actually a netbook owner with no drive. |

No I have an external Sony burner for all of the reasons I listed above. Being most of the stuff I put on my netbook comes from the internet. It doesn't often get hooked up. I did use it to install Diablo II though. |
