Supposedly a 64-bit kernel is only needed to manage more than 32GB of memory. More important is that all of the third party kernel extensions need to be updated to 64-bit first.
What I'm hoping for is that this update enables 8GB on my mini |
Actually I thought that what it was suppose to do allow over 4GB DDR3 in 2009 Mac mini somebody need to try it to be sure. _________________ 24" LED Cinema Display,Mac Mini '09, 2.0GHz,

| Nothing for me when it comes to the SuperDrive. I'm not worried about it either. Mine doesn't make a sound at startup or coming out of sleep. |

Maybe it depend on the brand of Superdrive you have. I have a Mac Mini with a Pioneer (which does not make any sound) and another one with the Optiarc (which makes an awful sound at start up.)
Nothing showed up about this subject.
It is strange, on the one I got saturday with the noisy disk with the optiarc Superdrive only the Garage band update showed up via Software update. _________________ Mac Mini i5 2.5 GHZ, 16GB Ram.

These firmware updates are for the 2009 Mac minis. The SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0 isn't required on all machines though. Please follow these steps to find out if your Mac mini requires this update and if the update is successfully installed:
- From the Apple menu in the upper-left menu bar, choose About This Mac.
- Click More Info, then select Serial-ATA in the Hardware section of System Profiler.
- Select the DVD entry, and inspect the Revision field in the window below.
- If you see Revision: 2AHF, your Mac mini needs this update. If the update has been successfully applied to a Mac mini computer, the field will be 2AH1 _________________ Brian

Me too. I guess it's just for the Optiarc drives that zedtvl mentioned earlier. |

Nah, your computer is just mixing in roman numerals.
After installing the EFI update, has anybody noticed a performance increase? My Mini seems snappier. _________________ "You can't have a light without a dark to stick it in." - Arlo Guthrie

I don't notice a difference either way with 4GB. It all seems about the same with SL. |

I'm on Leopard - my SL just shipped today - and I really do think that the update added extra oomph. Opening Mail and Safari is now a one bounce of the dock icon thing, and it never was before. This was especially true of Safari, which regularly took four or five bounces to start. This is on a freshly booted machine. _________________ "You can't have a light without a dark to stick it in." - Arlo Guthrie
