It's funny. After a day spent with a Windows XP machine, I've come home to the Mac I've been complaining about -- and ye gods, it feels fast! Wink Cool

My Mini started up faster today then it did yesterday - by far. Think the caches are being optimized. And startup is now way faster than Leopard.

I have noticed a slight improvement with startup times as well. Shutdown is like blazing with Snow Leopard. I'm also grooving the new Finder, Expose stuff, Services, Stacks, and QuickTime X. Snow Leopard also feels stable, quick with the 64-bit applications and less bloated. I mean, we had to shed that support for PPC sooner or later...right? This lays the groundwork now for moving forward. I do think Snow Leopard was overhyped in general though. Not so much by Apple, but with the press and overly exuberant fanboys.

Don't say that to a PPC fan because you'll be libel to have your head lopped off! even though it's the truth. And to show my impartiality (if that's how it's described) I was using a G4 PowerMac up until a month ago. It is a very capable machine, but I don't miss it. For my needs, my new mini out guns the G4 in every detail, which, truthfully, really surprises me.

Upload works for me in Firefox and Safari. Did you upgrade Flash? Snow Leopard was shipped with and older version. Also check your permissions after you upgrade.

Likes
- QuickTime X
- Dock Expose
- Wake on Wireless
- Stacks that scroll and can open folders
- The new Finder
- 64-bit apps open on like 1/2 a bounce
- Fixed an issue I was having with bluetooth becoming laggy while downloading something.

Dislikes
- I absolutely HATE that you cannot click on top of a window now to minimize. Please bring that back Apple!

Disk Permissions. To repair disk permissions, you'll have to run run the Disk Utilities app found in Applications/Utilities. Once you've started Disk Utilities, in the left pane, you'll see all drives attached to your computer (if they're powered up). Click on your main hard drive - this is usually the top drive. In the lower left of the right pane, there's a "Repair Disk Permissions" button - click on that. Once the process starts, it may take several minutes. Wait it out until it finishes.

Here's an explanation about what Disk Permissions are, copied from About.com:

"Disk Utility’s Repair Disk Permissions feature is designed to restore file or folder permissions to the state the OS and applications expect them to be in. Permissions are flags set for each item in the file system. They define whether an item can be read, written to, or executed. Permissions are initially set when an application or group of files are installed. The installation includes a .bom (Bill of Materials) file that lists all the files that were installed, and what their permissions should be set to. Repair Disk Permissions uses the .bom file to verify and repair permission issues."

Is this necessary because I didn't work with this before. Confused

Yes, it's a maintenance thing. Usually we only do it when there's a problem with something not working right. Although some suggest repairing permissions after every update or upgrade.

If you're having a problem with your Mac, it would probably be a good idea if you started a new thread in the "Mac Mini Troubleshooting" forum about it. Smile

I'm getting a weird problem with the menu bar where certain icons are missing. The menu's still function but I just can't see whats where. The ones that are missing are fast user switching and the sound slider. If I disable Fast User Switching and re-enable then the icons show back up.

It may be related to iStats Menu 2.0 which is also running and using the menubar. Although iStats, Dropbox, little Snitch, spaces etc are all showing up fine in the menubar.

New feature: Someone pointed out to me that if you hold the Option key when clicking the Sound menubar item, you can switch the sound input and output sources. Much like SoundSource.
