I was asking a friend who works for Apple at the Genius Bar about getting a new Mac Mini to replace my 1.42 G4 and he said "Wait until October."
I tried but couldn't get any further details out of him.

I don't think Mac retail store employees have any information about forthcoming products.

This is partly from experience, though only from speaking to a few employees. More to the point, if you consider how much Jobs demands secrecy, retail people would be the last people to inform of anything. I think many people at Apple HQ don't even know.

Right before a products ships, they have training; I'm talking like a week. (We all see leaks on shipping orders right before something ships.)

my guess is he was thinking about snow leopard. In late august no one knew when snow leopard would be out(sept 1 to sept ?). So if you wait until october and buy a mini it would be preloaded with snow leopard.

Very nice - excellent explanation.

Something like a big iPod touch?

4 years ago this month I used 123MM to help me figure out the best way to ensure I got a 1.5ghz G4 (instead of the 1.25ghz) when they were just showing up. I was lucky enough to get one.

Now I'm in the market for a new one (the G4 is just too slow, computers do not age well...) so I come here to see that there is a "rumor" of perhaps an update coming soon. This sucks! It sucks because I want to go buy a new one this week, but if there's any chance at all I could probably wait for another month or so.

Apple dropped the price of the AppleTV seemingly out of nowhere, so that gives me reason to believe they could upgrade (or drop the price) on the mini out of nowhere as well.

What to do?

no doubt you need a new one. If you sell on ebay do a 30 day buy it now listing with a until it sells option for your current system. cost 35 cents for each 30 days it is listed.

as a buy it now with one picture. list it high . if it sells high cool. then go out and buy a mini. if it does not only 35 cents lost or 70 if you renew it. It can help you make your mind up if you get 200 or so.

I'm having a tough time following your logic. There has been no past correlation between TV and the mini.

The price drop on the Apple TV was logical; Apple probably can't even get 40 GB drives anymore. But the Mac Mini was just updated so its not too logical they would drop the price, but it would be nice if they expanded the options a bit; like getting it configured with a 500 GB HD and maybe bumping the memory to 2 GB in the low end.

I doubt the mini would be updated twice in one year. Highly doubt it.

So either a price drop, or something else, but I would figure it's not something major for the hardware.

Also +1 to philiparcario for the Snow Leopard theory.

I was just thinking that price drop on the AppleTV came out of nowhere so maybe a price drop or mild update (like MacDSmith2 suggested) could come out of nowhere as well. I don't know.

Maybe I'm just hoping for it so I can get a better deal.

As it is I'll be getting a 2.0ghz, 120GB HD and 4GB RAM mini. Being a student that's $684. Then I'll continue using my old keyboard and mouse.

new mini is not coming for quite a while. there is no need. with mods. you can have 1.25tb dual hdd set ups 4gb ram and a 2.26ghz processor. I dont think it will get a big upgrade for more then a year. see this on ebay it is one of the two I have. I don't know how to post a photo on this site so this works. please don't pull this post.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Mac-Mini-2-0ghz-4gb-1-25tb-dual-hdd-snow-leopard-disk_W0QQitemZ150368541490QQcmdZViewItemQQptZApple_Desktops?hash=item2302a9db32&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ht_500wt_1182

now you do not need the modded mac book air dvd player. you can get a good player for about 50 on ebay. in white almost the same size.
you can use 2 500gb hitachi hdds for 160 instead of the wd 750 gb and the hitachi for 220 and build this for about 800 for the 2.0 model or about 950 for the 2.26 model.

so 50 for the player
plus 160 for the hdds
and 70 for the mod tray
plus 70 for ram
and 500 for a refurb 2009 2.0 ghz
total 850

then sell the pulled super drive for 60 you are under 800. why does anyone need a new mini for htpc or dvr. what we need is apple to take blu-ray into its machines. then a new mini would be need.

Huh? I don't need to do all that. I'll be quite set with the setup I outlined in my last post.

I'd have to download A LOT of porn to need that much storage, hah.

It seems like most of you guys are thinking there is NOT going to be an upgrade, so I think I'll go buy my new mini tomorrow.

Why not wait till October and see if there is a price drop?

Can you wait until 2020? Prices should be better and everything that Apple offers should be much faster.

It is much better to buy when you need. That way you can make the most of it. Remember that selling used Apple gear gets most of your money back.
