Take it easy, warlock |
The only daft question is one that's left unasked
Here's an official Apple doc on the subject. It doesn't really tell you what a special permission is, but it tells you it's OK to have them! I'm sure one of the UNIX experts 'round here can explain better than I can.

It's all gone a bit wrong for me (
Update failed and told me to try again. I tried again, and it failed again. I rebooted - which took an age. Everything looked OK and up to date ("About this Mac" says 10.4.3) but things aren't quite working right (Mail's panels are blank for example)
I downloaded the full update, but the .dmg wouldn't mount. I booted off the Tiger DVD, mounted the image there OK and copied the package from the .dmg. Re-booted again, tried to run the extracted package and I STILL get "errors installing update".
I've run out of ideas. Can anyone help?
Cheers,
Pete |

It sounds like you got one big mess! Do you have a screenshot of Mail?
Try the old standards of repairing the disk permissions and resetting the PMU. I would probably go ahead do a fresh install if it keeps acting up. Play it safe and use Software Update to get 10.4.3 when you're done. |

Sorted it in the end by using the larger "combined" update downloaded from the Apple site. I'm still none the wiser as to why it all went pair shaped. For now I'm just glad everythings back to normal
Judging by http://www.macfixit.com/, it doesn't look like I was alone with my troubles.
Cheers,

|
|
| I hate to jump on the band wagon here, but I could swear I hear my fan running very lightly all the time now. It's very quiet in the room I have the Mini in, and before the update I could only hear the fan come up if I was doing something CPU intensive, now I hear it all the time. It's not loud or anything, just audible. This is not necessarily a bad thing nor am I complaining, just stating a fact. |

I doubt it will come with 10.4.3. You will need to run Software Update. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

| That was easy! Downloaded, updated, rebooted, after 3 minutes all was well again. System seems faster. |

I got my mini on Monday and the immediate software update that runs right after you get booted the first time grabbed it and installed right away.

After reading so different results in various forums (some with problems, some with major crashes, some with improved systems), I became somewhat "scared" to run the update without asking a couple of questions. Please forgime my ignorance, I just purchased my Mac Mini after more than 10 years without touching a Mac.
The questions:
1) If something happens and I have to reinstall Tiger, will I lose some of the software that came installed (iLife, for example)? I only have the Tiger original disk.
2) What can you recommend me for a fast, well-done back-up of my data?
Thanks in advance for helping this newbie!! _________________ Mac mini 1.42GHz, 512Mb, SuperDrive

I've never heard of this happening.

I use SuperDuper and like it a lot.

Thank you very much Picaman!
I now realized my mistake. A couples of nights ago I was reading the specs of the Quad and decided to entertain myself with the customization at the online store. At the bottom are the "software solutions"; I mistakenly understood it was the currently pre-installed applications (confused iWork with iLife, that makes me an iDiot), but if you wanted the back-up program you had to pay for it.
Conclusions: I'll practice my English and stop reading after 2 a.m. _________________ Mac mini 1.42GHz, 512Mb, SuperDrive
