I just won on ebay an OS 9 cd, which I thought was the full install version but turns out to be a daggone update version. I should have known when I won it for $15 + shipping.
Is there anyway I will be able to use it to install Tiger on my G3 iMac with slot loading cd drive? The imac didn't have any OS but I've been using linux on it at the moment.
Thnx. _________________ G4 Mac Mini | 1.25ghz | 1gb | 40gb | OS X 10.4.11 | 37" Westinghouse HDTV

I'm not sure I understand from your original post what the issue is.
*You have a G3 iMac, the only operating system on it is Linux?
*You want to load OS9, but don't have a complete install disk?
*You want to load Tiger (not currently loaded, correct)? Do you have the install DVD for 10.4?
If you have the DVD, insert in the drive, restart and hold the C key. If I've misunderstood, my apologies. _________________ 2.0 GHz i7 Mini 8 GB RAM, OWC Merc Extreme SSD & Samsung Spinpoint

Everything you stated is correct except the problem is I don't have a full installation disc to use for OS9.
From other post i've read, I need to install OS9 before I can install Tiger. Unless I'm mistaken.
I bought the OS9 upgrade cd from ebay, thinking it was a full install cd, but it's not.
Is there a way to use the upgrade cd and maybe the Tiger full install cd together to install Tiger? _________________ G4 Mac Mini | 1.25ghz | 1gb | 40gb | OS X 10.4.11 | 37" Westinghouse HDTV

I'm pretty sure you can load OSX Tiger without stepping through OS9; you have an official 10.4 install disk, correct? Insert 10.4 install DVD, restart and hold down C key to boot from DVD and follow the instructions as they come up.
Oh, are you hoping to keep Linux on the drive? If so, I will not be able to give advice on that as I have no idea.
Give it a shot and report back. Good Luck! _________________ 2.0 GHz i7 Mini 8 GB RAM, OWC Merc Extreme SSD & Samsung Spinpoint

Ez is right.
I have an iMac (PPC) that I have installed Tiger OSX on time after time...
I have merely run disk utility first to get the HDD in the right format needed to support OSX.

What they said, if your iMac has built in Firewire, which it should, then you can boot from CD directly and install Tiger on that machine.
If you want to alter the format of the drive, after you get past the initial welcome and language selection, you can go to the menu bar and go to Disk Utility, format etc from there. _________________ 2009 Mac Mini 2.0 C2D 4.0GB

I hooked up the external dvd drive to the imac and put Tiger disc in and started it up.
While holding down the C key, it comes to yaboot screen and showing, Press l for linux or c for cdrom, and stops at, cdrom booting...
Doesn't go any further and the light on the drive is not blinking. Three keyboard lights are on solid, Numlock, Capslock and Scroll lock.
Not sure what to do at this point. _________________ G4 Mac Mini | 1.25ghz | 1gb | 40gb | OS X 10.4.11 | 37" Westinghouse HDTV

the reason why..
The mac g3 any version.
Likes to boot from firewire or a internal cd-rom drive.
However will not boot from a usb cd-rom drive too slow and you will get freezing issues and the dead mac logo as well. |

Hmmm, I was tripping. The external drive has firewire & usb connections and I used the usb instead.
Thanks for reminding me to try the firewire interface. _________________ G4 Mac Mini | 1.25ghz | 1gb | 40gb | OS X 10.4.11 | 37" Westinghouse HDTV

I've had my external dvd drive for about three years or so and never used the firewire port. I always used the usb ports. Now I can't find the firewire cable for it.
What I need to know is the G3 iMac firewire port a 4 pin male? It looks like the port on the dvd drive is a 4 pin male also. Do they make 4 pin to 4 pin female firewire cables?
Any good place to buy one from?

Well, I found a firewire cable that works. I plug it in the dvd drive and to the imac, reboot and while booting, I hold the C key down, it does not seem to start booting from the dvd drive. It stops at the yaboot text prompt. If i press Return, it will load linux.
I boot into debian linux and can see the drive listed, with OS X Tiger disc in it. I can browse the disc and see all files. This is a known working tiger disc and dvd drive.
Any other ideas/suggestions?

Or burn a copy of Dariks Boot'n'Nuke for PPC and wipe the drive in~situ.

Ps : Not sure the following advice is needed, but it would be remiss to not give it.
Take the motherboard ram out and reset it after a couple of minutes. Also pull the main motherboard Pram battery out and then put it back in.
Then use BootnNuke. _________________ Of the four X systems in the world.
