Electronic Arts today announced the simultaneous worldwide release of The Sims 3 for Mac and Windows. According to the company, the third installment of The Sims allows players to create more than a million completely unique Sims personalities, influence characters' behaviors, alter their body shapes and immerse them in a thriving, seamless neighborhood just outside their door. And with all-new quick challenges and rewarding game play, The Sims 3 will inspire players with endless creative possibilities and unexpected moments of mischief and surprise.

The Sims 3 for Mac is priced at $49.95. System requirements call for an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.5.7 or later, 2GB of RAM, 6.1GB of free hard drive space, and ATI X1600, Nvidia 7300 GT, Intel GMA X3100 or better graphics. The game will not run on PowerPC-based Macs or Macs equipped with Intel GMA 950 graphics.

The Sims 3 is also available today for download from the App Store for iPhone and iPod touch.

I know the GMA950 is weak, but isn't that cutting like 50% of their potential customers?

I'm kinda disappointed with EA after Spore, but I might give this a look on the iPhone after 3.0 comes out.

I'm just happy that Apple finally got off the integrated Intel bandwagon. Let's pray they never go back for seconds.

Is this a 'real' mac version or an underperforming cider 'port' of the windows version?

Since it's EA, I'm going to bet it's a cider 'port' of the windows version.

You'd be a winner:
http://www.transgaming.com/business/cider/

It's listed on Transgaming's Cider page as a new game using Cider.

With that said, it doesn't appear to have vastly different system requirements than the Windows version of the game, save for RAM requirements (2GB on Mac, 1GB on XP, 1.5GB for Vista).
