As some may be aware, djh has released an official release date for his newest media center skin, codenamed "Stark".

For those not in the know, Duncan Harris, or "djh" as he is known on the XBMC forums, is the creator of the XBMC skin "Aeon". The skin is extremely popular, despite the fact that it has never made it out of beta stage. Instead of trying to go back and fix all the problems that became evident as development on Aeon progressed, Duncan decided to start from scratch.

The preview images that he has been releasing to anxious followers of his latest project have only fanned the flames of anticipation, but now at least, they don't have to keep asking "when?"

The official release date for "Stark" has been set for 30-03-09...details of which were cryptically given to fans in a post entitled "3... is the Magic Number" on the XBMC forum.

A select group of people will get a beta release next week on 03-03-09.

Looking at the preview images, its easy to see what all the excitement is about. I for one, am looking forward to making the switch. As much as I have liked MediaStream, I think its time to get Plex a new set of duds.

There is an extremely interesting interview with Duncan regarding the project, which you can read HERE.

...and of course, some teasers:

I gave Aeon a try, but went back to using MediaStream. I can't wait to give Stark a try now. It's looks pretty darn sweet. Are you getting the beta on the 3rd Aargh-a-Knot?

By the way, did you ever get a new 720p projector? I'm still going back and forth on the Mitsubishi HC5500.

No, I will not be one of the lucky ones. Its OK though, I am fairly patient.

I ordered a projector, and it'll be here Monday. I'll post more info about that in the thread I started on the subject, after I receive it.

Cool! I bet this weeked is going really slooooow...

I can't wait to hear the details. It will be interesting to see which model you went with, and how it's working out with the Mac mini.

Ok, 3/3 has passed, where are the reviews of this? I actually have no faith this will ever amount to more than playing around and beta stage. I too tried Aeon for about 20 mins. in beta and instantly took off....way too incomplete. I'm not convinced we'll ever see more here than eye candy on a website and promises of this being completed. We'll see said the zen master...

Fortunately, I have a little more optimistic attitude about it.

I guess you can just wait a month, and if there is no release, you can write an angry email to Duncan.

Confused

Just watched a video of stark in action.

!WoW!

You can download an HD version of the video HERE,

or watch a lower res version on YouTube, HERE.

Just a heads up, the reports are that this does not play nice with Plex right out of the box, but... as cool as it is, it won't be long after release that someone has completely ported it over.

Anyone who was waiting will be happy to know that Aeon Stark, soon to be known as "Aeon Auriga" has been released. I've been trying it out today, and while it doesn't work with Plex 100%, is does work pretty good considering it was designed for XBMC, and has not been tweaked for Plex at all yet.

A few things that I noticed:

* Weather does not work

* Apps are in "Games", but this is easy to tweak

* There is no metadata for any plugins, but Duncan has said that this is coming soon, and hopefully will work in Plex?

* The icons for the installed plugins are not displayed properly

So far, not so bad though. I wager that it will take less than a month for the skin to be modded for Plex. There sure are a lot of folks out there that want to see it work, some of the Plex devs included.

Duncan has said a few words on the Plex forum, indicating that while he is not going to actively make any of the necessary changes for Plex, he is more than willing to help people achieve that end.

The default backdrops are rather drab, so you need to get them from the Aeon site if you want it to look as sexy as it did in the Preview videos.

Aargh---

Have you tried Aeon Auriga? If so, can you explain the steps to downloading a Mac version? I have never used a git site...

I kind of put Auriga on the back burner, as it soon became obvious that some of the key functions that are Plex specific are a ways out from being addressed. Basically, the Plex devs are going to wait until there is a version 1 release of Auriga before tackling it. Also, they are working on a new skin for Plex that may obliviate the need for Auriga (for me at least).

So, no, I have no experience with git.
