Hey everyone,

I believe my sisters Macbook Harddrive died today. When you started the notebook up there was a clicking noise and on the screen there was a folder with a question mark on it. When I tried booting with the install disc nothing happened. Finally after trying "Disc Utility" I ran a "Repair Disk" and was just given an error.

My two questions are: Is there anyway we can retrieve her data? I kept telling her backup every now and then but no, she wouldnt listen!

Can I just purchase another hard drive and insert it myself? I have already removed the other one?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, there are services and they are usually expensive. A friend a few years back sent hers out and it took a few weeks and about $250. You'll have to do searches for who is doing it now. Sad thing is it could be something relatively simple for them and be expensive or they might actually need to remove the individual platters...one never really knows.

Depending on actual issue it might actually heal itself for a brief period if unused for a few days...long enough perhaps to get data off. I wouldn't suggest the freezer trick that I have seen posted here and there if it is important data that is on it. Perhaps best for a fee and "hopefully" a professional if the data is critical.

Here are a few that I found under harddrive recovery on Google:
