OWC Intros USB 2.0 Display Adapter

OWC today announced the release of their USB 2.0 Display Adapter, a device that allows users to add an additional display to their Mac or PC via any standard USB 2.0 port. The OWC USB 2.0 Display Adapter connects to HDMI, DVI, and VGA equipped displays in full 32-bit color at resolutions of up to 1600 x 1200. Up to six adapters can be configured to either clone a users primary screen or extend the desktop, allowing visibility of more applications at the same time on up to six individual displays. The USB 2.0 Display Adapter from OWC is priced at $99.

These adapters don't support OpenGL acceleration, but they work otherwise. I almost bought this one from HP a couple weeks ago. I decided to wait until Snow Leopard comes out though. I'm just going to pick up a new Mac mini at that time. |

| After having an HP officejet and digital camera, I would never, ever buy anything from HP again. OWC has never let me down, on the other hand. Not that I need this device, but it's good to have options. Hopefully the next generation will support OpenGL acceleration. |

I was just looking for something cheap. There are actually quite a few of these adapters out there on the market. I don't think they will ever support OpenGL acceleration though. At least that's what the people making the DisplayLink drivers seem to be saying.  |

I'm curious as to the performance of these adaptors - would they manage to display a 720p or 1080i or 1080p movie without hiccups?
If so, it would make a good upgrade to the previous generation MacMinis.
Does anybody know this?

Video playback is much more reliant on the CPU rather than the GPU as its only 2D. If your CPU is powerful enough to play HD then I see no reason this wouldn't display it hiccup free. |

Thanks - I didn't know that. My MacMini has a Core2Duo T7600 @ 2.3GHz  , and it seems fine at 720p & 1080i. |

Thanks - I didn't know that. My MacMini has a Core2Duo T7600 @ 2.3GHz , and it seems fine at 720p & 1080i. |
Any Core2Duo will play HD fine. I have a lot of 1080p HD content and it plays perfectly on my 1.83 C2D mini. Only about 50-60% CPU usage also.. |

That is highly unlikely. Even though the computer can decode a 1080p movie into RAM without any problem, trying to shove all those uncompressed pixels through a USB port at 30 fps will not be pretty. |
