DivX today announced the release of DivX 7 for Mac, the latest version of their media player for Mac OS X. According to the company, DivX 7 for Mac is a free download that provides everything you need to enjoy high-quality digital videos on your computer, including high definition H.264 (.mkv) videos with AAC audio and videos created using all previous versions of DivX technology. It also includes a free six-month trial of the DivX Pro Codec and a 15-day trial of DivX Converter. DivX 7 for Mac weighs in at 23.1MB and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later and an Intel-based Mac.

| I'm not trying to be smart, but why would one need this over Perian? Does it do something else or better? |

| Cool! I upgraded I am not sure how much different it is yet other than the look. I do like the new look of the Divx icon, and player. |

Perian is better because it includes a lot more than divx codec. This is only the better option if you need the bleeding edge divx codec. Most people don't.. |

+1. The DivX player looks much nicer. A little like Vista, but better. The screen dimmer is cool too. |

Hi, I am actually the one that design the new player and I appreciate the kind feedback! |

| Could someone explain to me the benefit of using divx over something more widely-available such as H.264 or MPEG-2? I don't understand. |

I also don't understand, especially since DivX is MPEG-4 + MP3 shoe-horned into the old .AVI file format. This leads to a mess of CODECs just like Quicktime, where you don't even know if you can play the file correctly, let alone on different platforms.
I got bitten once by more obscure formats like Yamaha's VQF and RealNetwork's RealVideo. I lost a lot of files back then, and I'm not helping companies popularize their formats anymore.
H.264, AAC, PNG/JPEG and PDF is what I use. I also use MPEG-4 or MP3 too in cases where H.264 or AAC support is missing. _________________ Mac mini 2010 (Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz/8 GiB)

That's what I was thinking. I guess it's nice to have the player around, if for anything else.

I tend to use MP3 over AAC for music, but those are the formats for me. If you can't play or read those on something, I don't want anything to do with the application or device. |
