I ordered my Mac mini (1.25 GHz) with 512 MB RAM and the Bluetooth option installed.
First I replaced the Seagate 40 GB 5400 rpm drive with a Hitachi 60 GB 7200 rpm notebook hard drive. I also installed an AirPort Extreme card. Then I replaced the combo drive with a Pioneer 8x dual-layer Superdrive. I also installed the missing AirPort antenna.
My mods are complete for the time being. I plan to install 1 GB of RAM and overclock my Mac mini to 1.42+ GHz at some point, probably when the price or RAM drops. Current config:
1.25 GHz
512 MB RAM
Hitachi 7K60 60 GB 7200 rpm hard drive
Pioneer DVR-K04L 8x dual-layer Superdrive
Bluetooth + AirPort Extreme |

i picked up the $500 mini the day after the keynote. after about a week of listening to iTunes stutter when i attempted multitasking, i went out and bought the official Mac mini disassembly tool from an authroized reseller (read: putty knife from local hardware store). dropped in a 512 meg stick of Samsung DDR333 i had laying around, and it's much better. but that pioneer DL dvd burner is lookin mighty tempting...
tnkgrl, any relation to the same name @ byodkm.net? and where exactly did you pick up this dvd burner? _________________ Main: 3.0P4|Abit IC7-Max3|1Gig DDR400|GF6800GT|SB Audigy 2 ZS|XP Pro

I'm the same tnkgrl
I picked up the Hitachi hard drive at centralcomputer.com locally (San Francisco), purchased the Superdrive online at mwave.com and the AirPort antenna online at cgnusa.com. I already owned a spare AirPort Extreme card. |

No way it will look cool and will match the car perfect. I plan on keeping it forever so I don't know how it will devalue it. It will make it . Now if I can only afford to go ahead with my plans! lol |

Aren't these upgrades? (and not really "mods")
When I think "mods" I think of things that you could NOT have done at your authorized dealer and that WILL DEFINITELY void your warranty. _________________ -=iMav=-

*mavherzog* You're right these are more upgrades than mods...
When I joined this forum and posted recently I didn't notice the "upgrades" section because on the other Mac mini forum I visit (BYODKM.net) there's only a "mods" section!
That being said I'm planning to overclock my Mac mini and add a FireWire port to it. I'll write about it here and it'll be nice to have all my mods and upgrades in one place
If a moderator wants to move this thread to the "upgrades" section that's fine by me. |

Lame because a) it doesn't void the warranty, b) because it's a joke, really
But here it is:

I'd love to add a FW port, but not brave enough to mod the thing until the warranty is dead... |

The only thing Ive done to my mini that changed the way it came from the factory was overclock the 1.25 to a 1.5 and overclock the graphics card by 9%...... Other than that there isnt anything else I want to do. _________________ 1st Generation Mac Mini 1.5/512/40gig/Superdrive/Tiger |

TNKGRL can i ask if modding the Hard drive with the faster one has caused the FAN to come on more often? Im thinking about modding my hard drive but my mini is a music server, i would just die if the fan came on more often than it already does to ruin my music. Thanks for info _________________ Mac mini |

I've read comments from people who've upgraded to 7200RPM drive and most of them report no big increase in heat or fan noise. I'd be more concerned with the noise from the faster drive. _________________ 14" 1.25GHz G4 iBook (died)

Dave must agree with the noise of the faster HD but boy is that fan annoying! It comes on everytime I put a CD in thesedays. Is yours like that? _________________ Mac mini |
