The scorpio black 250gb hdd really wins out over the oem hitachi. The kramer 800 fire wire hub running to a pair of sans digital external enclosures allowed a click and drag copy of a 180gb itunes file in 74 minutes that would be a 1tb in 6 hours fast. daisy chain the pair of sans digital external enclosures was the same speed for the same itunes file. 74minutes. I have a new lacie will test tue _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

That's a nice speed increase with the 7200rpm WD. You can really see the difference in the disk-related operations. Not that I'm surprised; my first HD upgrade from the stock 80gb 5400rpm Hitachi to a 120gb 7200rpm Seagate gave a noticeable speed increase in program startup, opening folders, copying, etc. It's not the Hitachi brand - their 7200rpm drives are fast, too - it's going to a faster spinning drive, higher density platters and a less filled up drive. _________________ Mini 1 (2012): 2.3 ghz Core i7; 16gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500gb Seagate XT

It would be interesting to see a 2.0vs2.26 Mini both with the 7200 drive. I'm wondering if that processor upgrade makes that much of a difference...I'm thinking not. _________________ Mercury TiBook 400MHz, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD, Airport

It makes a big difference if you use handbrake to encode. for a lot of jobs it is not a big deal _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

i tested a lacie 800 firewire 2.5 inch enclosure with the kramer fire wire hub and 1 sans digital enclosure. the same 180 click and drag copy took 120 minutes not 74.
still better then using firewire 400 but not as fast as the sans digital to sans digital click and drag of 74 minutes translates to 10 hours for a 1tb click and drag vs 6 hours for the sans digital to sans digital. click and drag.
this is the slower lacie 26mbs write time with fire wire 800
http://www.jr.com/lacie/pe/LAC_301310/
the faster sans digital 40mbs write time with firewire 800
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822110002
the kramer unit seems to allow the same speed as daisy chain of the sans digital units so it doe not slow down that fast 40mbs write time for a click and drag copy..
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/431602-REG/Comprehensive_Kramer_VS_30FW_VS30FW_3_Port_FireWire_800_Repeater_Hub.html
when I did tests like this with seagate free agent the write time was 20mbs for usb
with thermaltake the write time was 20mbs for usb _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

As future patches come out Philup, keep checking your XBench scores. I expect they will jump up some. _________________ Night Sailor |

My 2009 2.0Ghz 4Gb/320Gb 7200RPM got only a 119. With a fresh, zeroed out install. I couldn't get anywhere near the 140's like most with the same config. I tried all the tricks, fresh boot, updates, kill processes, no apps running...ect. Either I got some slow Crucial RAM or the Hitachi HD is slow. The Hitachi is DEAD quiet though which really made me happy. _________________ MacMini 2.0GHz C2D (2009)

the hitachi 320gb 7200rpm runs slower then the western digital 250gb 7200rpm ,but it is dead quiet.
it is a reliable drive and it is faster then the oem stock drives.

remember this is a 2.0 I posted all my 2.26 tests yesterday
this is the most interesting result of all my tests.
Based on these scores the western digital 500gb 5400rpm is equal or close to the hitachi 320gb 7200rpm in most ways.
this is with the same computer the same memory sticks. the wd costs more around 95 the hitachi runs for 60 on a sale. both are quiet _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

I guess I should have researched this drive more before I purchased it. It is slow as hell, comparatively. After rebate I'm only out $51.99. Can't complain on that end. _________________ MacMini 2.0GHz C2D (2009)

tony it is still a lot faster then the oem 120gb and quiet.
i have one in my 1.83 4gb mini for 4 months not a thing wrong with it. also it is better on the uncached read and write sequential 256k block tests which means click and drag copies of itunes
(or any larger file pictures) are faster on it then the wd 5400rpm drive. _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

Philiparcario,
I saw your test. What I can't find is a Xbench test running the stock 2.0GHz $599.00 USD Mini with 1GB of memory against a 2.26GHz Mini with the same base 1GB and the same 120GB HDD.
I'm planning to buy more memory and a faster HDD in the future, but right now I just want to know the speed difference between the two basic system with different processor speeds.
Thank you very much for your help.

Estuardo I would give them about a 10 point difference. Maybe a 110 vs a 120. You can poke around and look for some stock configs and general average.
http://db.xbench.com/comparesubindex.xhtml?machineTypeID=33&sort=date&minVersion=1.3
The link is in order by submit date being that the new mini's will be in the last few weeks, It might be easier to sift through this way. _________________ MacMini 2.0GHz C2D (2009)

no the oem 120gm 2.26 with 1 gb is very fast here are results
right now I don't have a test for 2.0 model. the results are very good with the 2.26 and 1gb for xbench. if you don't need too encode with handbrake the 2.26 model with 1 gb stripped would be a good deal. it is 750 at apple. you order a basic 2.0ghz with the 2.26ghz cpu option. use it with the sans digital as an external.
total comes to 900 plus you need two 3.5 inch hdds say 180 for a pair of 1tb's without any deals.

Why not compare the two systems with 4GB of Ram? That would be just as valid, and, if anything, better because this is the most likely scenario.
I'd guess it is a 13% gain. I would buy the base model and upgrade to the bigger CPU--since the CPU can't be upgraded later.
The upper model has too small a hard drive, and you don't want to buy memory from Apple.
So, the trick is to buy what you can't upgrade yourself--the faster CPU and upgrade the Hard disk and memory which you ca upgrade yourself. _________________ Night Sailor |
