Tuesday, March 17, 2009
Posted by: Glenn
Apple has released the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Firmware Update via its Software Update Utility and on the Web. According to the company, this firmware update addresses possible intermittent flickering and compatibility issues. In some cases those issues may include no video on some external monitors when using the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter with your Mini DisplayPort-enabled Mac. The Mini DisplayPort to VGA Firmware Update weighs in at 11.4MB and requires Mac OS X 10.5.6 or later. More information about installing this update can be found here.

| I think they may need to do something for the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. I'm on my second Mac mini (early 2009) and both have flickered when coming out of sleep. I don't think it's an issue with my display either. |

I can't wait to read the headline "Apple releases audio support for the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter." |

When I saw the title of this post, I was totally thinking the same thing!!! I wonder if it's built into the hardware (it's in the spec). |

I think that was stated as being inaccurate on Wikipedia.

I'm having the same problem with dual displays. The display connected to the Mini DisplayPort always flickers when the computer comes out of sleep mode. This only happens when the computer has been asleep for an extended time though. And the flickering is mostly on the bottom of the screen. It's not a constant problem though. If I turn the display off and then back on, the flickering goes right away. It's just more of a nuisance. |

| Slightly off topic here, but was wondering if anyone can report success using the mini dvi to video (composite or S-Video) adapter with the new mini? |

Per the VESA spec audio is supported http://www.displayport.org/compliance-standards/default.htm :
| Quote: | The scope of DisplayPort specification is limited to the transport of a single, uncompressed video stream as
the main stream, with the optional insertion of secondary data packets such as an audio stream packet.
Transport of multiple main streams is not covered in the current specification. However, the DisplayPort
specification allows for seamlessly extension to support the transport of multiple uncompressed video streams
and other data types. |
The question really is how Apple's logic boards support DisplayPort. To use the current audio drivers they would need hardware to merge the audio into the DP stream. Otherwise the NVIDIA chipset would need to generate the audio stream. More on this at http://lowendmac.com/ed/fox/09ff/displayport-audio.html |
