| So just to clarify, if you put put more RAM in the base model (the $599) will you get the video performance of the top model? |

| You simply can't understand the "two screens" thing until you've used it regularly. I started a new job 6 months ago and we have dual screens on nearly every machine here. Unfortunately, it's all XP but having two screens is just awesome. It's so much better than constantly minimizing/maximizing and piling so many windows on top of one another. I got so used to it here that I had to get a USB-to-DVI thingy to use at home with my Mini, just to hold me over. But this news of native support for dual screens on the new Mini is great. The frame rate and system lag involved with that USB display adapter are atrocious. It can barely handle YouTube.... |

i like the sound of the machine. but its far too expensive for me sadly considering the amount of use that my current mini does, or rather doesnt, get.
the 9400m is enticing. |

| With the Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter included by Apple, and a FW 800 to 400 cable adapter ( to be ordered ) in a few days the BTO mini will be ready to rock and roll. |

To our friends in the UK it was not an apple pricing issue, its a pound and Euro issue. Two years ago the pound was 2.06 to the US dollar ad the Euro was peaking at 1.76 or so. Now the pound is 1.40 and the Euro is 1.25, that is why I think it is hitting your cost so hard.
Now as for the update I am happy and sad at the same time. I bought my mini three weeks ago and see the new one offers some real oomph over mine. But thats life and the one I bought does everything I want it to do and very well.
The 599 really is like a price drop because it is the same specs as the old 799 just a bit better. I think I will be saving my pennies for the 599 model as a bad arse little HTPC |

Until someone actually tries it, or apple update the knowledge base articles, no-one will know for sure. But seeing as the hardware is identical, it would appear the video memory difference is a software implemented restriction to stop the video card taking too much ram from a 1gb base model. _________________ Mac mini 1 (Old Timer - test Box @ home) : 1.42 PPC @ 1.75, 1GB Memory, 320G HD

I already posted this before, but the 128MB vs 256MB is the *minimum* the system will use. If you add more ram to your system the minimum will go up. Regardless, it will share as much ram to the video card as needed by applications.
Also, I read over on tuaw.com that the specs page might be misleading, the mini might only be able to mirror displays, not truly extend your desktop. _________________ Intel Mac Mini, 1.83 C2D 2.5GB, 80GB, Combo Drive

Ok, you can throw your rocks at me for being a doubting Thomas!
Wait - Let me get behind my Bat-shield!
Excited none the less!
I'm waiting to get the hard and fast data about if the CPU is socketed, and if it really handles 4GB(or more) of memory the way we want it to, and if upping the memory does result in more memory for the video card. Then I'll just say I can't afford it.
If there is anything I don't care for, it's the remote is extra. I mean come on Apple!

Either Apple completely dropped the ball, or more likely, someone at TUAW misread the tech specs page.
The specs clearly state, "Extended desktop and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on a DVI or VGA display; up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on a dual-link DVI display using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter (sold separately)" |

It has firewire and support dual-displays though.

It's also an option for the iMac. |

| I wish this would have been the update a year ago. I would have been a buyer of one and another 20" ACD. |
