Well, I was looking on CraigsList & I may be getting an eMac. The guy replaced the original 40 GB with a 30 GB & he put in a DVD Burner. I'm getting it for practically nothing. It has Tiger on it. Anyone have one of these beauty's ? I think they are gorgeous. And with my Aluminum KB & Mighty Mouse, it's sure to be a Welcome addition to the Mac Family. _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

I used to have an eMac, Dino. They're like a G3 iMac on steroids.
They are good machines, but they weigh about 56 pounds and the noise from the cooling fan is notoriously noticeable.
But if you're getting it for nothing, then you can hardly turn it away at the door! It will certainly run quicker with Tiger than Panther, and the memory is really easy to upgrade; there's a hatchdoor on the bottom of the machine that's removed with a single screw to access the memory slots.
Tell us how you get on with it! _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

Here's an article that you might find interesting -- some (British?) guy upgrades the hell out of his eMac: http://www.lbodnar.dsl.pipex.com/eMac/eMac-upgrade.html
One thing I've got to take issue with; he says you can slap any old memory modules in, and it will be okay. NOT TRUE. I installed a cheap 512MB module in my 1GHz eMac and the machine refused to boot. (Had a hell of a job getting a refund from the goon who sold it to me. Eventually he ordered some Crucial memory, I paid him the difference, the eMac booted without a hitch and everybody was happy.) _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

Cool. But you just reminded me of the RAM link you sent me on eBay (a couple of months ago) for my iMac G3, do you remember ? It was 2- 512 MB sticks for $18. from an eBay company called MicroX. That ram did that exact same thing. It did not allow the iMac to boot. Reason being, it was "High Density" ram which only works with 10% of the computers on the Market today. A Mac is not one of them. Neither is HP or Dell. Don't worry, I'm not blaming you. I should have done more research myself. Thanks for that cool link. I'm getting the eMac tomorrow. It should be fun to play with. Although it only has 256 MB of ram. I need 4-512 MB sticks. 2 for my iMac G3 & 2 for this eMac. But it's hard to come by 512 MB PC100/PC133 for Cheap. I'll eventually find some on Craigs List. _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

Oh Dino, I'm so sorry!
I've got some PC100 modules in a static bag somewhere which I'd be happy to mail to the US -- but I'm sure that they're only 128MB a piece, which wouldn't improve matters...
Maybe you can recoup some of your loss by selling those MicroX modules on eBay???
Edit: Perhaps I can make up for my earlier mistake... http://cgi.ebay.com/1GB-2x-512MB-PC100-Apple-G3-iMAC-G4-Powermac-Memory-Ram_W0QQitemZ290293484615 _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

Hey Johnnyboy, don't worry about it. The company has supposedly credited my account, so all I lost is the shipping costs. We'll see if they really did credit me, next Credit Card statement. That was my first eBay experience, which was unsuccessful. My second purchase on eBay is for an EGR Valve for my Mazda Protege'. That's coming from Canada & it's been over a week & no updated tracking from USPS. So I guess eBay is not for me. Anyway, thanks for the ram offer but I have 128 MB sticks. I do appreciate it, though.
I know I'll find some 256 MB or 512 MB eventually on Craigs List for Cheap. I just bough an iBook, Bluetooth Mighty Mouse, my iMac G3 and now an eMac G4 all from Craig's List. Guess I'm a Craig's List Fanboy ! _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

Okay Dino, you sound as though you've got a plan that you're happy with. Like I say, keep us informed about how you get on with that "pumped-up iMac". _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

Ok, I got the eMac. Wow, very sweet machine. Much faster than the iMac G3.
I love the way it looks. It's in great shape & the guy put in a DVD-Writer.
It's a bit loud like the iMac G3 but the on board Amplifier is Louder, so when blasting music in iTunes, I only hear the Music. I have 384 MB of Ram. I'll get it up to a gig when I can. _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

Great news, Dino.
When I replaced one of the 128MB modules in my old eMac with a 512MB stick, that gave me a total of 640MB. I seem to remember that it made a noticeable difference to performance.
I guess you'll have to update your sig now to include the new arrival... _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

Signature Updated, but I had to take off my other 2 iPods to make it fit. Said "Signature Too Long". Anyway, someone wants to sell me a 256 Stick of ram that would bring me from 384 MB to 512 MB. I don't think that's going to be a significant enough change or make a drastic difference, But I also know, the more ram. the better in ANY case. _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

Oh yea, I put Front Row on my iBook & my eMac with Tiger. There is a way to Install & Activate on MacUpdate's Site. No infrared Remote, but the Keyboard works just fine. Pretty Cool ! _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

I have a Emac.
In fact i am writing this on it right now.
My system specs are
G4 800 mhz
512 Megs of ram
250 gig hard drive
running mac os x leopard using leopard assist to install.
everything is running great.
if you want to keep the noise down on the machine keep it away from a wall as much as possible the fan noise echo's off of walls which seems to make the emac sound louder then what it really is. |
