Steve Jobs Taking Medical Leave of Absence
Wednesday, January 14, 2009
Posted by: Glenn
Steve Jobs today announced that he would be taking a medical leave of absence from Apple until the end of June. He also announced that Tim Cook would be taking over Apple's day to day operations in his absence. Here's a copy of the letter Steve sent to Apple employees with all the information:
Team,
I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.
In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June.
I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple's day to day operations, and I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job. As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out. Our board of directors fully supports this plan.
I look forward to seeing all of you this summer.
Steve

Take care of yourself before taking care of Apple, Steve.

| I absolutely wish Steve the best, but this seems a little like legal cover for the other statements. I mean, things must be really sliding with his health. It's really, really sad. |

| This news may hurt the stock price and hype levels, but I think Apple is sitting relatively pretty right now. That's even without Steve Jobs at the helm. The iPod, iPhone, iTunes and switch to Intel have Apple stronger than ever. Plus, they essentially have the same management and design teams in place. I'm not writing off Steve, but they can more than do it without him. I would rather see the guy get healthy and get to spend some time with his family. He obviously has a rough battle ahead of him. |

| In a way, this could be good for Apple. It will prove to the remaining doubters that Apple can function without Steve Jobs. That being said, I still hope that he's able to return this summer. He does bring a certain level of magic to the table. Who knows, maybe he'll come back tan, ready and resting just in time for the WWDC. I don't know when that takes place this year, but it would make for a nice comeback event. |

To be honest, I don't think Steve Jobs will ever return to Apple in the same position. They'll probably take the hit tomorrow and move on. That may sound insensitive, but that's the way the business world works. The Apple BOD doesn't seem to want this hanging over their heads anymore, and Steve Jobs appears to be in denial about his condition. Meanwhile...the PR machine at Apple has handled this horribly from the start. They should have just said he was sick and let the man work to his death or whatever. There is great honor it that. I mean, we're all dying! Tomorrow isn't guaranteed to anyone. JMHO
Get well soon Steve! Just do what's right for you. _________________ 2.4GHz MacBook Pro/4GB/320GB HD

I think it's a real shame there is all this focus on Steve's health. It's a personal matter and he should not have to share all the gory details with the entire world.
I think rumor sites should focus on the companies products rather people's personal lives.
That said I wish him all the best, and people please stop bashing him for all your wildest product dreams not coming true, he's one man not an entire company! He's obviously got enough sh*t to deal with as it is, without having to take abuse off people who haven't got their 30" apple streaming 3d video machines for $199!
No doubt apple will continue to be one of the worlds most successful companies even if Steve does decide to take a less involved role, has everyone forgotten about Jonathan Ive ?! _________________ If i can't lower heaven I swear I'll raise hell! |

Sad to see any human being have health problems. I agree he does add a sense of magic & fun to a corporation as large & successful as Apple. I hope he gets better & I wish him health, longevity & happiness! _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD
