My office ordered a received a new Mac mini 1.42 Ghz from the UCLA computer store last week, but I wasn't able to really work on it today, when I installed some new RAM. Lo and behold, turns out we got a 1.5 Ghz model (though the box still says 1.42...)
System profiler says it's also got a 64 meg Radeon 9200 (still not Core Image compatible) and an 8x DL superdrive. Can't tell with Bluetooth. Anyone...?
This means the new minis are in the channel now or my co-worker is the lucky recipient of a screw up. Anyhow here are the screens:

Well, my co-worker's the lucky one. I'm just stuck with my lowly 1.42 Ghz at home
To me this clearly looks like a mistake (as the box was labelled as a 1.42 Ghz) so this isn't *necessarily* a sign that these are coming out soon. But I think I saw on another forum that some other guy also received a 1.5 mini as well, so mine isn't an isolated case.
either way, the upgrades have been produced. anyone wanting to buy a mini should wait. |

Think you could sneak on Xbench and post the results?? I am curious to see how it compares with other "stock" mini's..... _________________ Mac Mini 1.42GHz

brother337 what kind of hard drive is in the 1.5 mini?
Everyone else...
I didn't want to start a new thread on this subject. I was wondering... How many current Mac mini owners are going to upgrade to these new models? I am seriously considering selling my mini on Ebay and getting a new one. I would like to have a Dual Layer drive, AE, Bluetooth and 64MB video card. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

I'd consider it if I could get someone willing to buy mine _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini / 1GB DDR / 80GB HD / Panasonic UJ-845-B 8X DL DVD±RW / 10.4 "Tiger"

I'll try and post an Xbench tomorrow at work. I don't, however want to crack it open to see what speed the HD is. That's a little invasive and it's my coworker's machine, and he already annoyed at me for co-opting it so much so that I can blab on the web.
The way I figure, this was a mistake in packaging. These machines probably are not out in full force yet, but this is a sign that they will be soon. |

| You don't have to crack the mini open to see what kind of hard drive is in it. The drive will be listed in System Profiler > ATA. |

I don't think I will sell my mini. I'll probably put it the front room so guests can try out the operating system. Though this does mean that it will be some time till I can pony up the money for a new one. Hope this is the last upgrade till the Intel chips tho. The way I see it, a good mac is usually 1200 bucks. I've only spent half of that on one mini. I'm sure I can justify buying anther one to my girlfriend. |

I'm still happy with my personal 1.42 mini. I can always easily upgrade the superdrive to a DL model (now that we know that the Matsushita UJ-845 works in the mini) and the 1.5 Ghz processor isn't that much faster.
I'd imagine that the 64 megs of VRAM would make a difference when using high-resolution monitors (20" and above) but since it still won't accellerate core image, I don't see a reason to upgrade. I *do* wish hey had put a Radeon 9550 in there instead. |

I too am happy with my Mini (1.42 with SuperDrive booting from an external FireWire drive). For me, everything included in the upgrade would be "nice to have" but not "need to have."
That said, the new configurations are a fantastic value, assuming pricing stays the same. Congratulations, brother337, on the forum scoop!

Think Secret reports on the Mac Mini upgrade. From the story:
"UPDATE: Sources have informed Think Secret that Mac mini box labels will continue to list the older specifications with no indication of whether the newer or older systems are contained within. The motivation behind this is to help clear current inventory without lowering prices. Essentially, customers are promised that the Mac mini they purchase will have specifications "at least" equal to the label, but that their system may exceed those. Customers who purchase a new Mac mini to find they ended up with the older configuration will not be able to return the system in the hopes of getting the newer configuration without paying a restocking fee. "
If true, ordering sounds like a crapshoot to me, at least in the short term.
