The new version introduces over 50 features and enhancements, including the ability to run Leopard Server in a virtual machine. It also improves OS integration, performs up to 50% faster and incorporates a range of security, backup and power saving features to give Mac users a truly easy, fast and powerful desktop computing solution.

I got the notice of a $39.95 upgrade this morning. The old version works great for Windows; no reason for me to upgrade on that account. However, Parallels 3.0 lags behind VMware Fusion, and even the freeware VirtualBox in support for Linux, so I wondered what they are doing on that account. I posted some specific questions about this in their forums. Here are the distros/versions their respondent indicated will be supported in version 4:
CentOS 5.0 & 4.0
SUSE Enterprise Server 10 SP2 & 9 SP3
OpenSUSE 10.3 & 10.2
Red Hat 9
Red Hat Enterprise 5.0 & 4.0
Debian 4.0
Fedora Core 9, 8 & 7
Mandriva 2008 & 2007
Ubuntu 8.04 & 7.10
Xandros Business 4.0
a user added Ubuntu 8.10 and openSUSE 11 to that list.
Another new feature: shared folders, which isn't supported for Linux in version 3. But all of these distros and all of these features are supported in VirtualBox! What isn't is drag and drop of files from virtual machine to Mac and vice versa. I'm waiting to find out whether this feature is now supported in Linux. It is in VMware Fusion, but Fusion doesn't yet support some of the new distro versions (e.g., Ubuntu 8.10).
Edit: Parallels 4 doesn't add drag and drop support to OSes other than Windows. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

I have two complaints about Parallels Desktop for Mac.
1. It doesn't feel as fast or responsive as VMware Fusion.
2. Unlike VMware, Parallels seems to be charging for major updates.
I've actually wanted to give VirtualBox a try for a while. Do you know if it supports Boot Camp partitions Fox? I already have a small one for XP that I use with Fusion. |

Sorry, I can't answer that question, aquaman. I've never used BootCamp so I don't have any BootCamp partitions. I did a quick search and couldn't find any postings that suggest VB can run a BootCamp partition, but several that suggest it can't.
There is some indication that Parallels 4 will be more responsive than Version 3, as the company claims to have made it more efficient in terms of CPU utilization. The new version also provides DirectX support, which may improve speed with some applications. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

I would love to upgrade, but I can't justify spending another $40 bucks. I also realize that Parallels is in business to make money. I just think the upgrade price should be way less. Somewhere in the range of $10 to $20. |

| I might give Parallels 4 a go on my MacBook Pro to compare it with Fusion. I haven't looked at Parallels in well over a year. That being said, it would take a lot for me to switch from Fusion 2. Which as many of you know, was a free upgrade. It's also running beautifully. |

I looked into VirtualBox more and that seems to be the case. I'm going to stick with Fusion. In fact, I just updated to 2.0.1 and it's running really nice. I mostly wanted to see what the fuss was about VirtualBox. And hey, it's free. |

That's a funny ad; better than their other youTube infomercials. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

I decided to upgrade and so far it seems better. I'm happy with Parallels and I have no reason to change. For what I need Windows for it is fine. Otherwise I'd use the PC downstairs. _________________ 2.5 GHZ i5 Mac Minu 8Gb Ram
