The only difference between a duel core solo mini and a C2D 1.8 is how much memory it can take.
The 1.83 can take 4GB but can only use 3.28GB of it. The 1.66 mini (if thats what you bought) can only take 2GB of memory. So Depending on what you paid for the DCS and a T7400 there could be the chance for some substantal savings over a 1.8. |

Update.
Success replacing the processor.
I received the 2.16 processor last night and put it in. I must say this is not a job for large hands. I completely cleaned the heatsink with paint thinner to remove all the old compound and placed a small amount of artic silver on the new processor. I was able to remove the heatsink anchors and retain there usefullness but elected to use nylon screws and nuts to reinstall it. I first put the heatsink on in the wrong position and quickly found out you could not reinstall the HD/CD-ROM caddy. This proved to be a real pain in the A$$ to fix because I had already cut the nylon screws short but I got through it after a few choice words 
The end result was it booted in like 20 seconds instead of the minute to 90 seconds it used to take. Movies load instantly and play back flawlessly. Movies that used to shutter now play perfectly. 19GB RAW HD .TS streams play back really smooth where as before they would stall and shutter. There is no increase in CPU or system temperature and the fan runs just as quiet as before. This upgrade is well worth the expence, time and effort. I now run a 2.16 mini with 320 gig 7200RPM scorpio black hard drive, DVD-RAM Superdrive and 4GB memory. Now I'm off to put the old 1.83 C2D into my 1.66 Solo. |

Anyone know if these modified processors are usually simple to find, or is this kind of a one-time deal? I want to do this, but am trying to be good and only buy what I absolutely need - and this doesn't qualify. Besides, I also want to do a hd and wireless upgrade and total would be $250 or so. This is looking to be a slow year financially so I'm trying to cut back where I can.

I don't really need a super c2d upgrade despite my track record. I've got an E8400 if I need juice. A 1.8 c2d would be a great upgade for my 1.5 solo. Anyone know of any channels I could use to get one cheap? Maybe I'll stumbe onto one here....

my advice is go to apple.com search refurbished every day in the morning 6 to 9 am eastern standard time. the refurbs come up 1 or 2 times a every 10 days or so. the 1.83 is 500 with free shipping and a free printer with a rebate. buy it and sell the printer and the old mini as a package on ebay. I did that with my 1.66 and the net cost for my 1.83 with 4 gb ram and a 320gb hard drive was around 240

I went crusing on eBay looking at the T5600(1.83Ghz) and the T7200(2.0Ghz).
I saw that the T5600s run about $100, and the T7200s run about $130.
Kaga sells T7400s(2.16Ghz) for around $140. I did balk at $250 or so for the T7600(2.33Ghz).
The difference may never be noticed, but I'm thinking that for $40, you are much more futureproof.
In all honesty, I'd never want to do a mini CPU upgrade again(I'm sure those who have done it a few times have a trick, but I don't), so I'd rather go faster than just fast.

I did the same thing on eBay earlier. That T7200 is the sweet-spot for me in terms of performance but the T5600 is more in my price range. Guess I'll keep looking for a killer deal on either and let that make my mind up.

Just another update.
I installed the 1.83 processor leftover from my 2.16 upgrade into my 1.66 mini and the second time around is a charm. It took me half the time to do the upgrade as it did the first time around (now that I've had some practice) and it booted right up. I even got back my apple startup chime which was not working up until now (must have been a loose speaker connection). It works like a champ and runs fast and cool.
I'm kinda bummed right now because I have nothing left to upgrade. I guess I'll have to find another way to spend my free time. Humm wonder what the wifes doing right now  |

How long each time? I'm sure if I double the time it took you the first time, that will be about the time it takes me! 
Grrrrrr, i hate this board! It makes me spend $$$. I bought a Hitachi 7K320 while shopping around at Newegg a couple of days ago. I just couldn't pass up the price. I already have one in my MacBook. I'll pick up a T7400 and wireless N card and do all three at once. I think that will take care of it, but is there anything else I should consider upgrading while I'm in there? I'd rather do it now then going back in later.

Sounds like you have it covered. T7400, n-wireless card and I see by your sig you already have 2 GB memory. Only thing I can think of is if it don't have a superdrive DVD+/-R then that would be nice to but I'm pretty sure the 1.66 comes stock with it.
My 1.83 came stock only with a DVD-ROM so I went for the superdrive as part of my HD/Processor/memory upgrade stratagy. As far as n-wireless my entire house is network hard wired and I use my MINI as an HTPC on a wired network so for me it would be a waste. The only place I use wireless is on mine and my wifes laptop and with that we usually just surf the internet or do work related low bandwidth stuff so wireless b/g is fine for us. |

I just upgraded my 2.1 mac mini 1.83 C2D to a 2.33 C2D bought on Ebay from the Kaga fellow in Hong Kong.
Installation didn't go smoothly. I broke no less than 3 of the nylon clips, but fixed the heatsink on the cpu with metal nuts and bolts, and some insulating tape.
I didn't bother to get fancy thermal paste, just used some of the goo that Kaga includes with his processors.
The 2.33 processor runs at the same 60°C @ 1500 - 1600rpm fan speed as the stock 1.83 when idle but slightly hotter when encoding: 92°C @ 2800rpm versus previously 85°C. May still decrease as thermal paste settles in.
I took the opportunity to upgrade the HDD as well, to a WD Scorpio 7200rpm 320GB/16MB.
