likes : keyboard, LED display lighting
dislikes: small hd 60 GB vs. 80-120GB(offered on other netbooks), 3 cell battery, wireless G - networking, swirly marks on case design, max memory expansion says 1GB (hopefully that's not a total of 1GB), position of mouse buttons |

HP's first attempt at the ultra portable was roundly thrashed by all the major PC magazine reviewers. Most particularly, for being overpriced and grossly underpowered.
From a Pro position.
Certainly the keyboard and general look & feel of the machine, was about the closest of any of the sub laptops to a Mac.

The new model looks like it has retained that big fat boundary around the screen.
It makes the machine look like HP are being 'cheap'.

What I want to know....is...
Where the hell is Apple in relation to this growing niche market...?

I think there are few reasons you won't see Apple in this market space.
1. Standard OS X simply is not optimized for such small screen resolutions. For Apple to be successful, they'd need to roll out a special version of OS X to take advantage of the diminutive machines. And that simply is not cost effective for them.
2. Apple doesn't want to play in the bargain basement computer sandbox. While many people like the netbooks for their portability...most are buying them because they are cheap. The popularity of the netbooks (IMHO) has more to do with the economy than with their small size and portability. Apple likes being a computer boutique.

What's with these netbooks and always having that ridiculous bezel around the screen?!
In total agreement in Aqua on that, it just makes it look kinda goofy, in my opinion

Possibly iMav.
However, if that were the case, you'd have to explain why legitimate copies of OS X work perfectly well with older 12 inch powerbooks. The difference between a 10" & 12" screens is hardly an issue.
Don't forget, there are plenty of so called 'hacked' versions of OS X already on these sub notebooks.
By comparison and in relation to Linux, (OS-X's erstwhile cousin) the screen resolution argument seems improbable, because of the similar code underpinnings and subsequent capacity for Linux to fit perfectly well, with a whole swathe of screen sizes, from pocketPC's, to whopping 48 inch screens..
Also lets not forget the iPhone and Google's G-Phone..
Last but not least, if Windows can squeeze a cut down version of Xp into such machines, then I really can't see what technical problems would be facing Apple on this front.
But I will concede, that perhaps (as you rightly pointed out) sheer economics has more to do with their decision making than anything else.
