| I just bought an Airport Extreme base station at the Apple store in Pittsburgh today. I noticed that it smells really bad tonight. In fact, all of my Apple stuff has smelled this way out of the box. It's sort of a distinct odor until it airs out (or burns in). None of my other computer equipment or gadgets have ever smelled this way. You might think that I'm psycho, but has anyone else ever noticed this? It sort of makes me sick too. I'm thinking about putting it out on my balcony tonight to help it air out faster. |

I can remember my AirPort Extreme smelling a little strong at first, but it seemed to dissipate fast. I don't know if smelled like my other Apple equipment though. Maybe my smeller is just going bad. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

Make that two of us. It's kinda like that new car smell, or maybe something else.
By the way, I think most of the smell coming off my AEBS was from the rubber pad on the bottom. |

In Networking I we were installing new Brother laserjets and the smell inside the toner packaging smelled bad but good like new car. _________________ "You must control your future by taking command of your present, and fixing and learning from your past."

| Never really noticed this will my Apple stuff, but I had an iHome stereo that stunk in the worst way. I couldn't get the smell out of my nose. It had a horrible plasticy and burnt wire smell and took like three months to go away. I'll never buy another product from them. |

This is weird that you guys are reporting this stuff.
About 6 or 8 weeks ago I finally bought a domestic DVD recorder. I've been wanting one for ages so when Richer Sounds had a Panasonic with good reviews on sale for £99, I went for it. Got it home, unpacked it, detected a kind of 'burnt' smell coming from it, but set it up anyway.
After a week, family members were refusing to sit in the lounge because of the sore throat that the smell from this DVD burner was giving them. I had to take it back to the store, but they were pretty cool about it and gave me a full refund.
I still want a DVD recorder, but now I'm really wary... _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

| I think a lot of people are hypersensitive or allergic to the smell of new plastic and latex. I know that it hits me in the eyes. They really start to burn and tear up. I also have a real allergy to the material or adhesive in Band-Aids. If you put one on me for more than 15-30 minutes, I'll have a welt that lasts for weeks. I was to be tested one time, but chickened out. I hate doctors and needles. |

The classic corporate trust, but verify comment. It will be interesting to see if anything becomes of this down the road. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

I'm sitting here LMAO! This has gotta' be the funniest posts yet. I always have been a fan of the new Smell of Electronic Equipment & Computers in General, while unpacking them. People have always considered my love of these smells, a possible sign of insanity. Who knows ? Maybe I'm not the only one Insane after reading this. No offense to anyone. But I never noticed much of a smell from my Mac Mini or the Apple KB & Mouse. Maybe this big old Italian Schnozolla is Losing it's Touch. btw, JohnnyBoy. I bought a nice LaCie DVD-RW d2 External Drive and it does not smell. But it works great. Boy, I love this site!! I'm glad I bought a Mac! _________________ iMac 27" 3.06 8GB ATI 4670 1TB HD

Good news, it only took two weeks for my AEBS to air out.
It's scary that toxic fumes news came out after I started this thread though. |

On domestic flights we're only allowed one piece of hand baggage, so before I flew home from my nearest Mac dealer, I unpacked my Mini from the box, thew all the non essentials away, and stuffed the computer in my briefcase. I guess by the time I got home, any pongs had gone.
