Apple Releases Thunderbolt Firmware Update
Monday, June 27, 2011
Posted by: Glenn

Apple has released the Thunderbolt Firmware Update via their Software Update Utility and website for direct download. According to the company, this update provides Thunderbolt performance and stability fixes on Macs featuring the technology. They also note that after installing the update, your computer will restart and a gray screen will appear with a status bar. You should not disturb or shut off the power on your computer during this time. The Thunderbolt Firmware Update weighs in at 486KB and requires Mac OS X 10.6.8, which was released late last week.

It's funny to see an update for Thunderbolt. I haven't heard of anyone owning a Thunderbolt device yet.

It makes me think of the old saying. "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" ThunderBolt almost seems DOA to me at this point. The performance is smoking, but it doesn't seem like mainstream devices at a reasonable price are coming out soon. Heck, LaCie and G-Tech are like the only ones that even seem interested. There could also be a Mac tax associated with these devices. I''ll tell ya... I'm just not that excited anymore.

Soon you’ll be able to connect to a host of Thunderbolt-enabled devices. Here are just a few of the first:
Storage

* Promise Pegasus R4 and Pegasus R6
* LaCie Little Big Disk
* Sonnet Fusion RAID

Video Capture

* Blackmagic UltraStudio 3D
* Matrox MX02

Adapters

* Promise SAN Link Fibre Channel adapter
* Sonnet Allegro FireWire 800 adapter
* Sonnet Presto Gigabit Ethernet adapter

Give it time. Once one company comes out with a drive others will follow suite.

Thunderbolt may not take the world by storm, but neither did Firewire, it did well enough though.

Here's more (Sony laptop with Thunderbolt)

Western Digital will also make Thunderbolt drives.

It will probably be pretty darn expensive when it comes out, but I would love to see that SSD Little Big Disk with TB from LaCie in action. Cool

This has me drooling...
