It works fine on my atv. FTP'd a couple of .avi movies at the 250GB drive connected to the atv usb port and plays them with no problem. Saves the hassle of trying to upgrade hard drives and converting movies.

Hey Sipper, do you know if I can connect a drive to the ATV that already has media on it, or do I have to connect a blank drive and fill it up using the software supplied by ATV Flash?

Hi

I connected a 250Gb USB drive to the appleTV that had been used for time machine backups. I could then browse all the TM folders from the appleTV. I think therefor that any media already on the drive, in your case, will be accessible.

Enjoy

You were right!

However, the ATV is having some major problems playing my .avi's from the USB drive. Big time lag on the video, audio is o.k. Looks like I'm stuck. Crying or Very sad

Hmmm, sorry I can't help there. I don't have any lag watching .avi's. Maybe one of the guru's could chip in here.

What's the specs of your .avi's? If you don't mind me asking. I have a feeling that's my issue.

Sorry, not sure what you mean by specs, however generally my .avi's are about 700Mb files ripped from my dvd's. Is that what you mean? They are probably not the best quality on earth, but more than adequate on a 42" plasma.

Oh, I meant like the video and audio codecs you used.

Mine are:

h.264 @ 2500kbps
AC3 audio
.avi container

My .avi's average around 2GB per file! Shocked (Super high quality)

What app do you use for your rips?

If Handbrake, what settings?

I think I'm on to something. . .

Ahh okay. I'm using h264 at 1500kbps, audio ac3@160. Hope this makes sense.

It does. My only question would be is it:

ac3 @160

OR

AAC @ 160

Question Question Question

Big difference. That also explains my problem. Apparently my super high resolution files are the problem. Visual Hub, here I come. . . . Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Indeed it is AAC@160. It was too late at night here. Hope you sorted out your problem. I too like Visual Hub.
