Mail.app email "order" question

In Mail, if you have a folder sorted by date so that the newest emails are on top, if you use the Delete button on the keyboard to delete an email, Mail deletes the email (yay) but then highlights (moves to) the email that was on top of that.

For example, if these were emails listed in a folder:

2
3
4
5

And you're on email #3 and press delete, it deletes #3 and takes you to email #2.

Does anyone know if this is changeable?

All of the other email clients I use always take you DOWN to the next message, not up, regardless of how you have your folder sorted.
