"Spaces" on a Mac 512K

There was a poll a while back asking who was going to upgrade to Leopard. I said that I wasn't, and also speculated that "Spaces" could have been implemented on System 7. Turns out, I was being far too conservative.

Check out this vid, which dates from 1985. Zip it forward to 4:58, where Andy Herzfeld shows off the hack he created over a weekend and which Apple paid him $100,000 for . Does this look familiar to Leopard users, or what?

That's pretty neat JB. Spaces remains one of my favorite new features. I think Apple did a nice job implementing it.

They got it right, but it took them 20+ years.

I don't think they did. Transition triggers are too limited and the eye candy is extraordinarily plain. I found VirtueDesktops easier to use, but unfortunately too buggy to live with.

Spaces is generally pretty stable but it still has a tendency to put "popup" windows on the wrong (current) "space" - and then switch to the "space" where the application actually resides, leaving you with a non-responsive application and a hunt through all the desktops to find the (urgent dialog) window. Sometimes it also clashes with the screen saver, leaving the screen strobing between desktop and screensaver (my bet is this is spaces although my only evidence is anecdotal).

Spaces is cool, but I'd like to see a live and more realistic icon in the Dock. Kind of like the standard GNOME desktop icons, but with more realistic thumbnails inside each space. If that makes any sense.
